As of Jan 1st, we will be able to mount our GPS to the windshield. Not in the best location, but at least we can do it.

Windshield Mounting of GPS Legalized in California (But There's a Catch)

Gps

I was about to quote the new law when I noticed your link.
It seams they weren't thinking very clearly about the location rules especially in full size vehicles with large windshields. Still haven't decided where to mount mine.

Especially a windshield like with my motorhome there is no way without getting out of my seat, that I can reach any part of my windshield.

I see people with them all over the windshield. Even dead center.

Me too. I drove with a suction cup writing pad in the center of my windshield for many years and never had a problem. I don't think cops were likely to make an issue out of it unless they had some other reason to dick with you.

But hopefully this new loosening of the law will make them care even less.

On a motorhome you probably have lots of places right on the dash to mount it. Maybe with some velcro, or one of the Proclip mounts.

Ours seemed to work just fine laying on the console between the seats. I may not mount it at all.

Dredging up this old thread to show a new GPS mount I just put in my truck. It's made by ProClip.

Simple, fits perfectly, does the job.

I've been working with custom POI files. Thought I would share a couple of my favorite websites:

POI Factory:

Tips and Tricks for all Garmins:
http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/

There is a lot more to these units than Garmin tells us about. I was particularly happy to find an elevation display, on the satelite location screen.
