I have an 08 Explorer,Eddie Bauer, 4.0L, with the factory navigation and Sync system.
It keeps coming up with in-complete map data when trying to set certain routes, so I've been looking into getting the maps updated.
I found what I thought was a solution on Ebay. But all of the updates appear to be DVD, and our explorer only plays CD's.
Would I still be able to update the maps using the DVD? Or should I start shopping for a portable gps?
Well I went ahead and bought the DVD, and it does work fine. But I had to navigate through the settings to find out how to make it work.
I ended up going to Menu>System Info>Navigation maps. Once you are there it will ask you to open access for the Navigation DVD. Then the front of the screen will actually fold down to reveal a second disc slot and the old dvd will eject. Insert the new disc and then it will begin installation.

Just discovered this myself the other day when I was going through the menus trying to find the ID for my radio in my 2008 Explorer without having to call the phone number for SiriusXM. For a NAV upgrade, I was hoping to be able to update the maps to newer than 2015/16 via version 13P for the DVD, but that was the latest version I've found and the EBay listing said it was discontinued in 2017, so I guess this is farthest I'll be able to go.
