My previous Tow Vehicle, a shorty Dodge 3/4 ton High Top Van (for an Airstream 30' Sovereign) had started to run hotter than usual on my last rally run with the Airstream. I changed out the fan clutch about a year ago on the van and did not want to sink money into a new radiator on a 100,000 mile vehicle. Therefore, I was "casually" in the market for a new tow vehicle. After looking for about a month for a low mileage High Top E-350 with a V-10, I spotted the Excur on the Houston Craigslist.
It had been driven almost exclusively by "the wife", who was basically a soccer mom with 3 rug rats aged from 6 to 12 (as can be attested to by the "permanent" orange, grape, and red cool aide stains on the rugs - these colors are low-lighted by various chocolate ice cream drippings).
It seems as if the couple just did not want their kids driven around in a vehicle out of factory warranty.
My gain.
They were asking $17,500, I offered $15,000, and we settled somewhere in the middle. Outside is flawless. Other than the multi-colored carpeting, the interior is also nearly perfect. Certainly good enough for Mary and me and the five pups to go camping in.
As the previous owners (PO's) had already purchased a new BMW of some sort to replace the Excursion, I am sure a cash offer of an envelope chock-a-block full of Ben Franklins prompted a quick transaction.
It has been my experience (especially as I get a bit older and less inclined to do "stupid stuff") that a Tow Vehicle (TV) with a tow rating which includes a 20% "Safety Factor" is a prudent way to enjoy touring this great country. The Airstream, loaded for a long trip, and some boondocking, CATScales at about 7,500 lbs, or 75% of the Limited's 10,000 lb tow rating. I run a Reese Dual Cam at this time, but I am also in the market for a Hensley Arrow. No use taking chances on the things I can control at this stage of the game.
You can also use photobucket.com if you prefer, but I do not know much about that.

Welcome aboard.
Good Luck,
-JR

After purchase expenses
1 glow plug $10
1 Factory key $35 + $65 programming... only had one key
2 extra remotes $25 via ebay
AAA towing -free-
I Just bought this one off ebay. You can search the item number (120363253212). I looked at it several months back but they did not accept my offer then. This time they did. They had also fixed the fuel leak and had new fuel pump installed. However I ended up having to have AAA tow it most of the way home (84 miles) due to the Passive Anti-theft System activating. (THANKS to AAA Plus/RV 100 miles free towing) Turned out that at some point it had a remote start system installed. it had since been removed and they just cut the wires and left the transducer chip from the remote start Zip Tied to the steering column. Thus it was interefering with the PATS getting the correct signal from the Factory key.... Also had to replace the #4 glow plug as the DTC was triggered... new problem but he gave me $50 off the price for it..
I like it so far, Its pretty clean with only a few minor issues. Previous owner also had installed a 4" downpipe and exhaust... that was a nice little bonus that the seller didn't catch in selling it (rancho 9000 shocks too). The tires are a bit wide for my liking 315/75r16 BFG AT's so may go for something narrower like 255/85r16... There is a slight clunk in the front going over bumps; I think a tie rod is bad. had to tighten up the steering box ball and worm drive due to excessive play. lastly the tranny downshifts a bit too easily so I plan to add a shift kit like trans go or something. No keyless entry remote was included and only got one key. though had spare remote from previous truck at home.
These little issues are why I never buy a vehicle long distance via ebay or any other source where I cannot drive it and check it out first...

I hate the wheels...maybe they can be polished?
I used to own Suburbans and was skeptical about changing, but I'm pleasantly surprised! It doesn't even wander like a lot of posters here say they do....not sure why not.

This dealer had about 5 1999 - 2003 4x4 7.3L trucks on his lot. This was the nicest and after driving a few others, I was sold on this one.
Only down side to this purchase... it has a Salvage Title. This was from a Theft Recovery. Locks are clean, steering column not damaged. Prior owners most likely couldn't afford the vehicle anymore, drove it to somewhere, parked it, and called the police and insurance. 30 days after reporting if vehicle is not found it is written off and issued as Salvage.

I looked at craigslist, ebay and autotrader in determining what a fair price was. Having sold cars in the past (short stint thank God), I think KBB and NADA had their place at one time, but with today's access to information are obsolete. Besides, KBB and NADA have never offered to buy or sell by vehicle for me.
I did replace the overhead console in the truck. The trip computer died within a month of buying the truck and I accidentally broke the door off of the sunglass holder while wrestling with a passenger (no further explanation will be given here). Got a quote from the dealer of $824.00. Bought one in auction on ebay in perfect condition for $96.00 and installed it in 20 minutes myself.
