I am in need of some advice. My poor 94 Explorer(135,000 mi) has been consistently generating two codes for some time now and it is beginning to bug me. The codes are: 226 KOEO and 212 memory. Check engine light is on and off during all conditions: cold start, hot start, cruising and stop/go traffic. Engine is running fine, no problems starting. It does tend to have a low idle when cold, about 500/600 rpm for the first few minutes, not sure if that has anything to do with this problem. Three days ago I used a bit of SWAG and replaced the Ignition Control Module with a new Motocraft module which did not solve the problem. All ideas/advice/experience is greatly appreciated.
I'm not certain about a '94, but I think it's similar to my '92 for these codes. TACH signal is generated by the crankshaft position sensor (CKP), passed to the ignition control module (ICM, I assume this is what you replaced), then on to the PCM. IDM comes from the ICM to the PCM as well, I'm not sure if the CKP is important in generating the IDM signal.
Both codes together, and having replaced the ICM, I would start checking the wiring between the PCM and the ICM, and maybe the CKP sensor circuit.
According to my schematic the IDM runs from the ICM pin 2 to the EEC-IV module and the tach. The tach pick off is prior to the EEC-IV module. I have tended to discount a problem with this circuit because the tach is working fine. However I suppose the failure can be between the tach pick off and the connection to the EEC-IV module. Is the EEC-IV module the same as the Powertrain Control Module - PCM? If so, I think the PCM is located inside the kick panel on the passenger side of the passenger compartment. I this is true, I need to locate pin documentation for the PCM. Also, I don't understand how the 212 code relates to the 226. Maybe someday I shall understand <g>
