I have a 1994 Ford Ranger 4.0L 4x4, 130,000. I love this truck but about a year ago it started not starting after it warmed up short distances in the summertime? It start right up on cold crank...Runs smooth idles like a champ...but if i shut it off..wont start for 20 to 40 min??? It doesn't happen in the winter months??? So I changed the fuel pump, filter, relays. Like everyone else these days I don't have a lot of money to just throw at this problem. So if anyone could help that would be great. I feel like it has something to do with the Ignition Control Module. Would that come up in a code? Any advice would be greatly Appreciated Thanks
Update I took my truck to ORiley's today at lunch and had two ICM checked they both passed ?? The one in my truck and a 20$ one i found in the Junk yard!!

next time it happens you need to determine if you have fuel and or spark...do you know how to do that?
I'm not very mechanical...but i'm not scared to take things apart..with out taking the plug out NO...I know were to check the fuel pressure. I can't check for codes because its a 94 there no were to plug into it right!!
Listen for the fuel system getting primed when you first turn on the ignition. Do you hear the hum [buzz] which only lasts for a second or two when you first turn the ignition on? If not then give the fuse assembly under the hood a good whack or two and see if the truck will now start. Don't beat the **** out of it, just a whack or two and see what happens. This problem doesn't seem to happen when everything is cold, but once warmed up it can be a sporadic problem that can get very annoying. If that is the case I will go into a detailed suggestion as to how to [hopefully] deal with it.
That's what I thought it was a year ago....so i just purchased a new fuel pump and put it in...witch BTW was one of the easiest jobs I have ever did on a Truck 6 bolts on the bed main wire harness and done! So every time I listen for the pump to primp and it dose I'm sure the old one wasn't even bad..It hasn't done this for a week now so its hard to try anything..I changed out the Fuel pump relay as well witch I don't think its bad...Any IDEAS at this point would be great. thanks for your TIME Storm
Bazzman 1953 that's funny I'll beat it next time....I have an extra fuel pump relay next time it happens I'll have to try that...Still hasn't happen again just waiting..
OK so last night it happened again...It was a hot day drove home from work..went to ball practice came home was moving top soil and it wouldn't start....So I listen again for the fuel pump to prim it made a defanaty priming sound shut off. Tried to start nothing...I pop the hood jumped out grabed the fuel pump relay it was warm...put the cold relay in turned key fuel pump primed...started right UP????...All less than 2 min?? Can anyone please explain to me whats going ON ???
Thanks Storm
You can still pull codes off an OBD I system it's just not as easy as plugging in. I don't even remember the sequences anymore I have not worked on one in a long time. The relay could just be a fluke. Does it happen more or less after just fueling up your vehicle on a hot day or any hot day what is your fuel level at when you have these problems? It almost sounds like vapor lock to me.
I have read a few articles off other forums saying they have vapor locks...that's what a lot of other people say too...when I tell them this strange event. I will look that up and see how to pull codes off my truck. I know the last time this occurred it was just more than a half tank. I had not fueled up in a few days.
Well it happen again today went to check the air in my tires and when I got done tried to start nothing...?? Reached for the spare Relay and put it in in less than a min...Started right up??? I'm 2-2..so.. I know this could be the temporary fix..but i would like to still try to get to the Bottom of this problem and make it a permanent fix..ANYONE???
@Furyus1 thanks as soon as I get time I will take a detailed look at this OBD1 Decoder I appreciate this a ton....I am a Proud Veteran of the IraqI war so to all my Brothers out there Happy Memorial Day...have a great weekend!!
Had intermittent starts, every time i backed the truck up at work it wouldnt start when i left for home. After i got it towed it always started right up... i initially thought fuel pump was maybe getting bumped around enough to fire but was just getting cold after sitting outside in the country. The computer read Ignition Control Module or Crank sensor but i didnt get either replaced as i thought it was a wire between fuel relay and pump. Relay was good. Recently the car sputtered on me and cut off ehile driving, i had it pulled instead of towed and we traced it back to the COMPUTER where there was a frayed brown wire. Hope that helps! Seems no one has ever posted an answer for this... God Bless
