My 91 Explorer has a hard starting problem. It seems to start fine when she is cold, but when it is warm (ie shut off and restarted 5 to 20 minutes later)it has to be cranked for 10 to 15 seconds before it will fire. I have a spare Ignition module and a spare crank sensor. Which i believe one of them is the problem. But I just wanted to get some insight to see if anyone else has had this problem before I start changing things. Once the truck starts, she runs fine, no lack of power or anything. She even idle's fine. It runs great. I am just worried that I will be driving and the engine will just die out on me.
Its possible the Tfi module is the problem , but Id check to see what fuel pressures you have before you try a warm start . My experience with crank sensors is they either work or they dont , thats not gospel , but that seems the general rule .
I have replaced the fuel pump about a year ago, and it was right from the Ford dealer, so the fuel pressure should be just fine. I will however check the fuel pressure via my fuel pressure gauge just to rule that out, but I am sure that that is not the problem. The 4.0 Litre V6 in the 91 Explorer is also not TFI. It has the EDIS (electronic distributorless ignition system) in it. So the TFI module cannot be the problem. As I think I mentioned I have a spare ignition module, so i will try that this weekend along with the fuel pressure.
When I do find the problem i will post it for you to see. But any more insight will help!
I ran the codes on my truck and it came up with code 11, system ok. I tried starting it and it still hesitated to fire. Once it did, it ran perfect. So just out of curiosity, i changed the ignition module and voila! It almost starts before the starter hits the flywheel!! Just like new. So, i replaced it.
Good deal , Glad you got it running better . When you mentioned ignition module , because so many people have Tfi ignition module problems , I assumed thats what you meant . The Edis modules seem to last much longer . I still think heat & age get the best of all of them .
