Turbo gasket?
So I just got a 94 IDI and realized that the previous owner was a idiot, when I opened up the air cleaner housing I noticed that half the air filter element was missing and inside the housing itself had some soybean shells and beans, bad right....
Well tonight when replacing the injector o-rings I had to remove the air intake up to the turbo and noticed a few other things that scared me,
1) The turbo fins were all there and for the most part at the same angle however they were all chewed up like a um soybean or something got past the air filter.
The impeller turned fine and didn't have any play in it so that made me feel a little better
Q) Can this part be replaced, without costing an arm and a leg
2) I had some oil in the connecting tube
Q) is this normal? do I have an o-ring that needs to be replaced?
I'm assuming that this is part of my oil burning issue
Sounds like a rat or squirrel got in there and made himself at home.
The compressor wheel (the part with the damaged fins) can be replaced without costing too much. You could probably spend about $100-$160 for a new one.
If the air filter gets to dirty, the turbo can suck the filter into the turbo, and that may be what happened.
Parts are available from ATS and Garrett, the system is an ATS system and the turbo is a Garrett turbo.
Several people have posted about finding turbo rebuild parts on E Bay for reasonable costs recently.
As for the oil in the CDR tube, that is normal for a CDR that needs serviced.
The CDR is supposed to shut the vent off at higher RPM so the turbo does not suck out excessive engine oil.
The CDR over time gets deposits like tar inside that prevent the CDR from operating like it should though.
The CDR is the tuna can thing on the drivers side rocker cover.
You need to remove it and soak it in a pan of gasoline, shaking it from time to time till it breaks up the deposits inside the CDR.
The CDR should appear new inside when the deposits are gone.
Now lay it aside and let it dry.
Once dry, reinstall it on the engine.
Caution, the CDR contains a thin membrane. Never blow compressed air or stick stuff in the CDR or the diaphram will be ruptured and the CDR will need replaced.
Also if chunks of black rubber looking stuff rinse out, the diaphram is already ruptured.
They cost about 50 dollars from Ford or International.
Thanks for the great responces.
I will try to clean out my CDR and see if that helps with the smoke issue.
Should have seen all the beans I pulled out from under the truck
