Drive problem (4R44E) 1996 Ranger

Any transmission experts out there? I have a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3L (4R44E).
Reverse, first and second gears all seem fine; however, when I put it in drive I get a slow response. It appears drive is not engaging correctly. The truck will slowly move forward but never seems to take off.

So far I replaced all of the clutches, plates, seals and filter from a basic rebuilt kit. No physical hardware damage was noticeable; however, the drive and overdrive clutches were bad as in metal touching metal bad….

The only thing left is the value body, but I do not see how it would affect drive engaging.

Any thoughts?

Remove the spring from the forward clutch control valve in the valve body.

This is something I do on all rebuilds, its to help with delays in forward engagement. Later on Ford did away this spring

If you removed the spring and the valve is fine and not stuck, my first thought is that the problem would be with the forward clutch. Did you replace the two sealing rings on the forward drum when you rebuilt this? Is the clearance in the drum ok?

In OD, first gear is the forward clutch, OD sprag, low sprag

In Drive, first gear is the forward clutch, OD sprag, low sprag, and the coast clutch.

Manual 1 is the forward clutch, OD sprag, low sprag, coast clutch, low band

Manual 2 is the forward clutch, OD sprag, coast clutch, intermediate band

Also one more thing if this trans is in failsafe or has no power it will start off in 3rd in both OD and drive, and it will start off in 2nd for manual 1st and 2nd. This could be you feeling of "slowly move forward but never seems to take off.".

Another thing it could be is a failed torque converter stator. If this fails the torque converter becomes a fluid coupling. You'll lose about half of your launch torque, so it will be SLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW off of the line, but drive fine once it's up to speed.

I found the item called "forward modulator spring" in my ATSG manual valve body display. Is this the spring you were referring to?

I only experience issues in drive. First and second gears are engaging correctly, so this should rule out the failsafe thought. Also, I replaced the torque converter, front fluid pump and adapter plate.

Thanks!!!!
Mark

Would the intermediate band cause my problem?
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I checked my intermediate band and found it was loose. I was able to turn the bolt by hand (2 rotations) before it would tighten up. From with I have read from the threads it was not set correctly.

No, it wouldn't. The intermediate band is off in first gear and should come on for second gear. It has no effect on first gear. If it were the problem you would have a problem shifting from first to second.

Could I still pull the spring if I add the Transgo shift kit SK44-55?
