King Ranch Leather - how sturdy?

Hey Folks,

I'm trying to decide between trucks. The king ranch interior is beautiful but I have dogs. How does that leather stand up to dog toenails?

My Weimaraner loves to stand on the front console and monitor my driving, but I'm not sure the leather would take it. It surely is beautiful though.

Any thoughts on dog toenails vs king ranch?

Hopefully someone with a big dog will chime in, but I think you would be ok so long as you clip their nails once in a while if they dont get to run. Its best to let a Weimer chase the neighbors kids lots to keep their nails down. Cuts down on the damage to floors in the house then too. We used to have boxers and they were not the ones that wore out he seats.....

Have seen many trucks with the king ranch leather interior that have been used very well and the leather looks like new. It looks to be very thick, clip their nails and you should be ok.

(OT but related sorta)

Getting the Weimaraner to sit still and stay in one spot is the real challenge. The wild grey ghost either needs to sit on the floor in front of the seat or on the seat and given their size, it's nolt a lot of room either way.

I'd recommend having a back seat that's a bench that can fold up to give him/her a little room to move back and forth.

I love Weimaraners. Had one as a kid growing up. Still miss her to this day...

OOH, man I don't know. I won't take my dogs in my KR unless I put a blanket over the seat/seats. Better safe than sorry, I love the KR leather and I imagine it's pricey to replace if it gets boogered up. Just my .02. cover them with something. HTH-Tim

I use the cleaner recommended by King Ranch:
King Ranch Saddle Shop
I don't have any experience with it, but lot's of folks on these boards use lexol:
How to Clean Leather with Lexol Leather Cleaner and Conditioner

I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I have the same problems with my dogs. I just went with a good set of seat covers for the front (will be getting the rear this christmas) to protect them. I got the console cover as well. My dogs love to ride in the truck and it would be just a matter of time before they tore the leather.

Here's the set...

They're ADVANTAGE MAX-4 HD and just about any vendor that carry the material can custom fit them. I paid right at 200.00 for the front set and glad I did.

Easy on and off for washing and has a foam pad underneath so not to scratch or dry out the leather.

Love KR seats.

I just got my 03 KR. The seats are a light tan color but seem to be in good shape. Just havent had much conditioner on them. I have a small dog a rat terrior that just loves going for rides with me. I would hate to have to put seat covers on because I really love the KR seats (but certainly couldn't afford to replace them!) I put a rubber mat on the passenger seat and I made a small leash that I attach to the seatbelt. I am going to have to cut his nails a little better. Has anyone on here ever had a dogs nails cut their KR seats? Just wondering. I have treated them once with the KR conditioner. I have bought some Lexol from the internet just waiting for it to come in.

I have a chocolate lab and she likes to watch the road too, paces in the back on the bench, jumps in the front when I fuel up or something like that. I have the standard leather, which I really am not happy with, and it has held up for 3 yrs., no scratches or holes anyway. I would think that dog nail scratches and the like would just be cosmetic for KR leather. It's supposed to be thick and similar to horse saddle type leather, right? I shure would like to get a KR one day! Those seats must be da bomb...

The KR seats will fade and scratch. Your just gonna have to live with that. But a good cleaning and conditioning every couple months helps. I use a leather cleaner, and a conditioner/restorer from tractor supply.

I've got a Greyhound and he could kick a 75 yard field goal in he wanted to. The way to get a seat to stand up to dog toenails is take a quilt and wrap the seat. Works good.

WOW! talk about bringing back a post from the dead hehe
Well I was told not to use the saddle soap at all on this leather, no matter how many use it or have been told to use it. I have gone 100% with the leatherique products and they are top of the line. As long as you condition it good you should be fine. However, I have thought about buying some good seat covers for when I decide to camp or atv ride, as I could mess them up using my truck then.
