Just wondered, has there been any problems , I want to change my fluid soon & am a bit worried about switching over, I know I can drain the TC & pan, will that be enough to add the new type with what may be leftover in the cooler? its a 2000 F350 V-10 & is working fine right now
Look at your stick what type does it call for? If it's Mercon V / Mercon you can use the updated Mercon V with no problems, have had hundreds done at the dealership i work at and NO PROBLEMS! The bottle will say Mercon V / Mercon and is in grey writing. If you have the old Mercon V bottle that says nothing about it and in green writing do not use it in a rig that calls for Mercon.

thats the problem, the FORD TSB says switch over to Mercon V, My truck calls for mercon. I hear it is no longer available
No the TSB does not say to switch to mercon, it's referring to their revised fluid. Motorcraft mercon V is compatible for the vehicles who call for mercon. They do not make a mercon anymore as the fluid works for both. If you buy fluids other than motorcraft you would still use mercon.
Nobody makes a MERCON fluid any longer. To be able to make a MERCON fluid you have to own a license from Ford to make it. Ford no longer sells MERCON licenses and all of the old ones have expired.
Some companies make a fluid that they say is for use in a trans that requires MERCON. It is unlicensed and you don't know what you're getting. Use MERCON V.
They still sell MERCON fluid around my area. The TSB I have seen says that FORD no longer makes Mercon as their Mercon V is compatible. Dexron III / Mercon is still being sold!

thats a dual rating, which should never be used in a mercon situation. Mercon only or nothing!
Everything from my last post to this one is WRONG!
2003F-350SuperDty5.4 - Ford NEVER made MERCON fluid. They don't make ANY ATF. It's all licensed to oil companies to manufacture. Ford's MERCON licenses have all expired so no company can legally make a fluid that is labeled MERCON. They can make a fluid that they say is safe to use in a trans that requires MERCON. Since Ford is not checking these fluids they can label ANY fluid they want as saying it is for transmissions that require MERCON. It does not mean that the fluid meets the MERCON specs.
Here's my previous post for those that passed over it:

Mark , this is the TSB i'm asking about, also , Krewat, I have ended up with two threads on this, One in the V-10 forum. Sorry about this
Ford changed MERCON V to be compatible with the 4R100 and all other transmissions that used to use MERCON. MERCON V is the replacement for MERCON fluid. I have not switched to MERCON V in my 4R100 because I still had enough MERCON left in my garage for one more change. Since my van is now the third vehicle for two drivers it does not get many miles. If I still own it when it is next due for a fluid change I'll use MERCON V.

I was used to an old TSB that said that Ford was switching over to the new Mercon / Mercon V fluid which could be used in vehicles calling for either MERCON or MERCON V, in the service manual it said to not use MERCON V in my vehicle that calls for MERCON. I have about 10 gallons on MERCON V is that safe to use / can it be mixed with the MERCON already in my trans? (even flushing you will still have some old fluid left in) I am looking into switching my t-case / trans / power steering over to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic ATF, if it's safe to use MERCON V I would probably use that to flush out the fluid in it now to get it all clean, then convert over to the synthetic fluid in my trans. I have been looking around to find out the answer to if MERCON V is safe or not and it seems to be an answer that goes both ways. After looking at the new TSB it seems to be ok to use the old mercon v but it doesnt really specify if you can mix them or not..... I really don't want to have to buy a transmission or rebuild it.
If it is the "old" MERCON V I'd be worried about using it in a 4R100. It might cause problems. I don't know about mixing them, but if you did a flush you would get enough of the old stuff out that it wouldn't be a problem.
Wow. I'm still confused after reading all these posts. The big question is can you use MERCON V instead of MERCON? I don't think anyone really knows the answer.
