The 2 engine are not even close to being in the same league.

The 351W stroker is basically a race engine for the street, the customer had
$15,000 in it 6 years ago. About .700" valve lift, Jesel rockers, solid roller cam.

Or another example is a 360 circle track engine. About 630 HP & 525 Torque.

Now the 400 was built for the street, the aim was low RPM.

I'm slow but hollenjoe's observant comment made me think of something. Since the 351M/400 have been used mostly in trucks, while the 351W started out as a car engine, maybe that is why it is more typical that Windsors end up being built as screamers and the 400's we typically discuss in this specific forum end up being built as torque engines.

I think that the torque and horsepower capabilities of each of these engines are very close, it's just that it costs a lot more to build a screamer out of the truck 400.

Capabilities are close. Look at the results from the last 2 PHR-EMC and you'll see there were a couple 408-410ci 351W that ran CHI heads and Parker intakes. The results weren't that far off from the 400 based engines. Once you throw that longer stroke into a W block, you change the nature of your build.

I'd like to see a comparo between a cast stroker crank 408ci 351W with a Performer intake and ported GT40 heads vs. a .030 over 400 with ported Aussie heads and a Performer. Cams should be similar and both should run the same carb. It would be interesting to see what you can build with mostly stock parts.
