Front end only driving?

I used to have a 94 Jeep Wrangler and after a couple of years starting having problems with the rear drivshaft and u-joints (a 4.0 HO, 5 speed manual, 13.5" wide rubber, and a 20 year old's driving habits are rough on them short drive shafts!) There were a couple of times when the u-joint failed that I stuck the shaft in the back seat and drove home under front wheel drive only power, would this be feaseable with our trucks? I know it can be done but would it do a lot of damage to a truck at least twice as heavy? Just seems like a lot of stress on the front end parts to be engaged on dry asphalt.

I don't think you'd have a problem IF you removed the rear driveshaft. I think the front axle can handle it.

I wouldn't want to tow really heavy with it, but I agree a d 50/60 is pretty stout.

I had to do this on my 99' F-350,,getting the rear drives shaft done up, ballanced,,,had to go to work,,went on the front end only,,,was about 14 miles each way,,went fine,,got a little wobble going around a sharp corner at stop sign,,,but never relly felt a difference with it.

Not a problem.

I had to do it with my '74 highboy...

It was interesting doing burnouts with the front wheels

And that was a Dana 44.

A D50 or D60 won't be a problem. Just take it easy, especially in turns.

I drove from Kansas City to Omaha using only the front in my 91 F150. It didn't feel strong enough to do burnouts, but sensible driving was no problem.

OK, I was just curious (and for future reference) and changing my u-joint made me think about it. I hope I won't have a reason to do it but it's good to know it won't hurt anything. Thanks guys.
