my truck keeps killing the battery so i just took the alternator out and cleaned the brushes and what not. then took it to napa to get checked. they told me it was good. and the truck dies as soon as you disconnect the battery. so i was wondering if you guys think its the volage regulator?
While the engine is running, check the voltage on the "f" terminal of the regulator. If you have voltage on the "f" wire, then the regulator is working.
A lot of times people work with and around the alternator without disconnecting the battery. They will get against the output wire and blow the fusible link. To see if this is blown, with the engine off, check to see if you have battery voltage on the large output wire on back of the alternator.
my truck doesnt have a large wire fron the altenator. it has 2 plugs does this maen the voltage regulator is on the altenator? and if i were test the voltage from that wich wire would i test?

franklin2 i did all this with my starting problem that i had thought it might be the regulator but i had good volts from all points u said to checkwhy cant this be easy...

If it has the long 3 wire (2 big wires, output, and one small, )plug in addition to the D shaped plug, there is a lot of problems with the plug going bad. They used to come with reman alternators. Should be available through local aftermarket parts store.
i pulled the wires off and checked the all the wires for continuity and i found one bad plug and replaced it and now its working great. it was under $13 to fix. thank you guys
