With a strong lack of trouble shooting skills I come seeking advise.
On this 1986 150 4x4 5.0 EFI I have been working on I have an issue I am not sure where to start looking.
First off I have replaced every wiring loom in it, both tanks, both in-tank fuel pumps, and a multitude of other things. I am pretty sure the front High pressure pump is running. (But will check now that I thought of it)
On a note about the tanks... I have the pumps running from a toggle switch because i can not for the life of me get them to work as they should. So the side tank is not hooked up for now electrical wise.
This thing will fire up and run with a bit of a high idle then it will idle down and often die after a min. When I hit the gas it falls flat on it's face and stalls. If i feather the gas as I hit it I can get it to rev up but runs rough sort of and back fires through the TB.
I tried to time it but had issues getting it where it should be at.
Could the timing chain have slipped and cause this bad running behavior?
I have it about 7 ish BTC anything more retarded then that and It dies.
There are a bunch of wires going to the dist. Most of them are grouped together, but there is one that is by itself, and it should have a plug or a jumper that you can unplug somewhere along it's length. When you unplug that connector, it takes the timing control away from the computer, so you can set it to the sticker on the radiator.
Here's a site also, that explains how you can pull the codes using a testlight or voltmeter. Ford Fuel Injection
If it's idle-related, check the Idle Air Control (IAC) at the throttle body. A rep at a Advance Auto insists that's the first thing I work out on my '86 5.0 before I get into other details with my marginal idling.
