Front end clunking/ thud and pulling while Braking
I have a problem in my front end drivers side of my 2002 F250 SD. It is more prominant in the winter months (rain lubeing part?) and I think that is why it hasn't bothered me all summer. During braking 35mph or lower I hear a clunk in the front end. I can also feel it in the floor. The truck pulls to the left and I have to correct the steering. At speeds above 35mph there is NO noise but the truck dives and pulls harder to the left. Durring the summer, when it's not making the noise the truck steering is sloppy but does not seem to pull to the left if the is no clunk but will mildly if braking hard from 60mph. Balljoints were my guess? I was thinking of rebuilding my whole front end but I plan to sell the truck next yar so I don't want to spend thousands of dollars. any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
You're thinking is same as mine...balljoints. If you can turn a wrench, they're not that bad and not that costly. If you have a shop do it, that's another story. I personally would do it. That way you can enjoy a safe ride for the next year, and also will be easier to sell when the time comes. Imagine how crappy it'll drive a year from now if you don't do the proper repairs. The worse it drives, the harder the sell.
If you're willing to do the work, you can have a nice tight truck for the next year or so, and spend less than $1000.
I just did my swaybar bushing... I also have the same clunk that you are talking about. Mine always confused me because it would come and go. I had totally forgot about it until it rained two weeks ago then it came back. Im probably just going to go get all the parts i can and tare into my front axle. I figure after 8 years of holding up that 7.3 it probably needs/deserves it.
