hi all, im trying to remove a steering column from a 94 ranger, everything is off the inside and free, under the hood i removed 1 rather large bolt thru a shaft, the column is now free but cant get it past the firewall- is there something in the 'under the hood' i need to loosen or take off?- TIA, john
theres like 5 or 6 screws that hold the column to the fire wall. just lay on the floor and look where the column goes through the fire wall. you will see it.if u cant find it let me know and i can take some pictures
i got the firewall cover off, but i cant seem to get the column free-- at the 'very end' there seems to be a square shaft going into a rubber sleeve- does that part just slide out with column too?- john
i dont think that shaft is supposed to slide out mine did though i guess it depends on how worn out yours is. is the steering shaft still connected to the steering box? even if you take that bolt off it can still be hard to slide off. soak it in some pb blaster and then take a hammer and chisle or what ever works and hitt on the shaft right where the bolt comes through. have some one inside pulliung on it and it should come off
more or less- im not really knowlegable here in mechannic terms- but the column is still connected to that little square thing with rubber, it looks like 4 'pins'
theres a bolt thats at the very end of the shaft u may need to turn the steering wheel left or right tho see it. take that off and hit on the shaft part twards the cab and it should pop off. if you cant figure it out i can take a picture.
As WideOpenFord said, there is a bolt/clamp and the end of the steering shaft that needs to be loosened. Actually there are three parts to the steering shaft connection: the shaft that runs through the column, an intermediate shaft and the shaft that goes into the steering gear box. Both the column shaft and the intermediate shaft have clamps that hold each of those shafts to the one below it. Loosen the bolt and clamp on the steering column shaft and compress the intermediate shaft toward the steering gear box and that should allow you to remove the column.
