I've got the steering wheel removed from my 47 half ton, but what about the cone shaped piece/bell under the wheel, on the end of the column? Does it come off, or is it part of the column? Trying to remove the whole column and steering box to put in new power stuff.
It was a pain.... I took my cab off, then just pulled the cover off. I had to unscrew a set screw and take a hammer with pliers to take the part number 3532 sleeve off.
Thanks guys, I left it on, and finally got the whole steering box and column assembly wrestled out between the frame rail and exhaust manifold (302) as one piece. And my 47 half ton is different than that diagram, it has a 2 spoke wheel, and the main difference is, my steering box doesn't have the pitman arm on the side, the splined shaft pointed towards the ground.
Easiest way to remove the steering column is through the floor. First remove the steering wheel, then remove the floor panels around the pedals.
Jack up the front end remove pitman arm disconnect horn wire, undo the column drop and ignition wires.
With the front jacked up remove front wheel undo the bolts to the frame by the steering box then pull the whole unit trrough the floor.
To remove the ignition cylinder its simple, take a small center punch. There is a small hole under the bottom of the lock cylinder drill a 1/8th hole up in the center where you center punched it. Just as soon as you feel the drill go through then stop. Now take a sheet metal screw thread it into the hole tighten it not to much but nice and snug. Not take a pair of vise grips or good pliers grab hold of the screw from the side then hit the vise grips or pliers with a hammer and the knurled plug will come out.
Once its out then remove the cylinder the key code is on the side of the cylinder take it to a good locksmith and get a new key cut. I've seen many that are drilled out from where the key goes in and they just ruined a perfectly good lock. You can reuse the knurled plug you removed provided it isn't damaged to badly, or Mac's sells new ones.
Thanks for the above info on this.... The key is broke off in the cylinder in my truck. My dad said he always remembers it being broken. I will get that fixed!!!
