Swapping the same engine?

I have a '96 2 wheel drive with a 2.3 and manual tranny. The local pull-yer-own has a '95 with 2.3, manual tranny and 4 wheel drive. Will these long blocks interchange?

The reason for asking: My '96 smokes a startup, like valve stem seals are bad. It only has 135K on the odo. This weekend I can have a whole engine for $90. It probably ran great when the front bumper met a pole.

So what do you fellas think, is it worth the trouble?

Second question, do the instrument clusters interchange? The '95 has a tach.

Wouldn't it be easier to replace the valve stem seals that the whole engine. Option 2: How about just swapping heads? How much do you know about the '95 engine. Might you be trading one set of problems for another. If you rebuild you current head or swap heads, you would have a better idea what the rest of the engine is like. Did the collision do any damage to the front end of the '95 engine - pulleys, water pump, harmonic balancer?

The title of your thread through me, I wonder why anyone would want to swap the same engine ha ha. Now I see you want to swap a different engine, but the same size. There's allways has to be a smart **** in every crowd ha ha. The one difference thats comes to mind is the OBD II computer, I know 96 was OBD II, cause I had one, but it was a 4.0. Does anyone know if 95 was OBD II, or was it OBD I?

Should be EEC-IV (OBD-I). I'm with Michigan 66, stem seals are easy to replace. Unless it's sucking down a bunch of oil, or has other major problems aside from the smoke, swapping motors sounds like a lot of unecessary work. Shoot, my '02 F150 has blown blue smoke on startup since the day I got it, I watched it do it when they started it to unload it off the semi! Never shows up in the form of low oil level, so I figure it's a faulty valve stem seal, nothing to worry about. Prolly make your valve guides last longer!!!

Actually, most Fords went Eec-V in '95. So could be either way.
