My 99 calls for atf. I personally use Royal Purple Syncromax. It has the viscosity of atf but additives made for gears and syncronizers in a manual trans. Much more robust and worth the $ in my opinion. I tow alot and the Syncromax seems to hold up better and keep the trans cooler, it is a synthetic formulation.
Just my $.02
Is it true that the 5 speed trannys take auto transmision fluid? Ive been using 80-90 gear oil with no trouble, but people tell me this is wrong.
If your talking about your 94 Ranger, it is supposed to get Mercon tranny fluid. Motorcraft no longer sells Mercon, but we can now use the new dual use recipe Motorcraft Mercon-V/Mercon tranny fluid.
Bet you'll notice a nice improvement in shift quality, maybe even a mile or so improvement in mpg!!!!
Heavy gear oil will make it hell to shift in cold weather when first starting the engine.
This is one application where I do not use anything but Ford ATF in the trans.
I was using Mobil 1 ATF, and my shifts seemed to be a little "draggy" for want of a better term. The low to second to third shifts seemed to not be smooth, and took a little more effort when the syncros engaged. I read an article somewhere that explained that Ford used a special formulation to allow the transitions from gear to gear to be smoother in the manual trans due to the design of the syncros. I am a hard head, and didn't believe it. But, I tried it anyway, what's a couple quarts of ATF. The article was right. After changing the oil, the trans shifted as it should.jd
