1974 F600 Emergency Brake
1974 F600 Emergency Brake
I have a 1974 F600 dump and I have lost the emergency brake. I believe it has broken on the cam that runs the brake shoes. How do I get the assembly off/apart and where can you find parts?
How does your emergency brake system work?
There are several different types.
Where is the lever, on the floor or bolted to the dash?
Are there cables from the lever to the rear wheels, or is there a drum on the driveshaft that has two 9" brake shoes contained within?
Parts can be found, figuring out which system it is...is the hard part.
Are you located anywhere close to Cincinnati?
I'll explain why I asked that question, when you respond.
the truck has the drum brake system on the drive shaft directly behind the transmission. Is has a floor mounted handle. I checked the mechanism that moves the S cam and found it loose. My guess is that I lost the cam connection. My problem is getting the system apart.
Too many problems with this old truck to list - but I'll tackle them one at a time.

I have same problem. How to get the shoe drum off back of transmission for parking brake
remove the four big bolts and the whole assembly comes off after you unhook the cable or rod that activates them. them it should be self explanatory.
those bolts have nuts behind the dust cover.. it is recessed about 2". I can not get a wrench or socket in the back of dust cover to hold nuts from turning... I am thinking about using a puller and pull whole assembly off. Can this be done??

It's been to long time since I worked on any of these. Did you post in the heavy duty section for any advice? Those bolts hold it to the extension housing on the back of the tranny. You would have to pull the bolts that hold extension housing to the tranny before it would pull off. NOT sure what you will run into. Good luck!
