Is there a site or link somewhere for a quick tutorial and removing and repacking wheel bearings? I have an '89 F250 2wd with 60k(not a typo) miles and I can hear a rotating type squeal. Regardless it needs done by now I'm sure. I'm a fair shade tree mechanic and even know how to use most of the tools I have, I've just never had a vehicle with serviceable bearings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Get a bearing packer. It just threads apart, you place the bearing in it, thread it back together, attach it to your grease gun, then pump grease through until clean grease is coming out the bearing.
WOW ! a no mess way to pack a bearing! Other than that it should be pretty straight foward removing and putting back together. Just work the grease in make sure it packed really good with grease! Its messy
No such thing as a no-mess way to pack bearings, unless you count dropping the truck off at a shop. I have a bearing packer like the one Jason posted. I bought it at Kragen for a few bucks. Well worth it, as the manual method is much harder and nowhere near as effective. That being said, a rotating squeal is far more likely to be u-joints than wheel bearings.
