Extra Key 2001

Recently had a remote start added to "my other Ford", a 2001 Taurus Wagon. I had to sacrifice a key to be placed into a "by-pass" module. Now with only one ignition kep left, I asked my service counterperson at the local Ford dealer about another to replace it. $80 he says. Most of the cost is for proamming I am told. Well, I see in the owners manual a section on how to program a key...same thing he is refering to? What's the best, most "cost-effective" way to do this? Can I get a blank and program it like owner's manual outlines? APPRECIATE the help. THANKS!!

I'd try a regular non-PAT's key first. I know nothing about remote-start systems, but if you have a key in a 'ByPass' module, it might just work. As far as reprogramming another one, IIRC, for my F150, you needed two working keys to program a third.

No, you will have to rewire the bypass module. The bypass module only sends the signal to the bypass when the ground while running wire is grounded (which is only grounded when the RS has started and is running the engine.) As soon as you hit the brakes, the wire is no longer grounded and PATS takes over.

More than likely what he is refering to is programming the PCM with his interface because only one key is available. It typically takes two keys to program a third, to help avoid letting valets program new keys to your vehicle and driving off with them later.

To make the bypass permanent, you need add a relay. Use the ign 1 wire to trip the coil, ground 87 and run 30 to the bypass ground while running wire.

Couldn't he just take the key out of the bypass module and use it and the key he normally uses to program a third? Then he can put one of the keys back in the bypass module.

I've never had to mess with a bypass module so I'm not sure if you can take the key back out or not, sorry if it was a dumb suggestion.

Not dumb at all. The only problem is, that is all someone would have to do to steal his car too, so the installer should have made the bypass module very, very difficult to get to. Ideally you should have to take half the dash out or more to find it, making it too time consuming to steal that way.
