Wiper arms

How do the wiper arms on 53f100 come off? The right wiper cleans the water off better so I thought I would change them around to see if it will work better on the left also.

Why don't you just try swapping the blades first?

Already put new blades on. The left on is leaving streaks right in the line of sight. The right one is not. Since they are new blades I was thinking the spring is weak in the arm.

The arms are a push fit onto a knurled round ****. These get corroded and are sometimes very hard to get off.

I bent mine back until the small tab disengaged from the base then pry the arm off with a flat tip screwdriver. It sounds like you have a bad spring in your right side. I went to Car Quest and got stainless steel ones for about $30. Before that I had the polish SS ones from Midfifty which had weak springs and didn't clean the windshield to good. You may be able to find another spring instead of replacing the entire wiper arm.

If you get a wide slotted screw driver and place it just on the edge of the wiper arm on the opposite side from the wiper (the bottom round part) and gently pry it up while also lifting on the arm, In other words apply even upward pressure to both sides of the base)it should slide off fairly easily.

Thank you for the information. I went to NAPA in my area and they could get some universal type. Was not sure if they would work so I thought I would try switching them first. THen may try to change the springs before I purchase any new ones.

I switched my wiper arms today. I found the shaft for the right one is loose. How do you tighten this up? I tried tightening the nut on the out side but the whole shaft turned. I looke under the dash and did not see another nut or anything to grip to hold while tightening the nut.

In looking at my 55 there is no way to tighten the shaft. The shaft is swedged onto the wiper arm. You would have to take the wiper assembly out and see if the swedge can be hammered to tighten or perhaps brazed.

Hi Pappy!

Well there is a wy to do it and I have had to do it on mine. But you have to be careful.

If you drill a VERY small hole through the **** that is PERFECTLY centered and is drilled through the center shaft as well, you can insert a pin in that hole and it will not rotate. I actually used a 1 1/4 finishing nail cut the just shorted than the diameter of the **** and drilled the hole so it would fit in snuggly. Then put a drop of fingernail polish (no comments you guys) on the ends to hold it and prevent rust. I did this on my 55 and had no problems in the 25 years I had it. I just had to do it to the 51 as well. If you need to replace anything, you can drive the pin right out, and while in operation, it is kept from falling out by the wiper arm!

Test the drill hole size on something BEFORE you drill in the wiper ****. We are talking about a 1/16th bit or there abouts. The **** is aluminum/pot metal and it will start very easy.

I wonder how many folks are going to have fun me for with this suggestion! tee hee

Im probably going to get thrown out of here , but I got so po-ed last winter, I took
the whole wiper assembly out electric motor in all and flung it in the woods. I bought
two marine elect wipers and put them overhead like a mail truck. Thats the end of
those stupid pivots. Some of you know this truck has a 12ft highway plow on it and
I have to have wipers and another hint. I stuffed a 79 pickup complete heater box
assembly in there years ago , talk about defrosters it will melt your hat off. Now back
to painting snow plows. sam

This has nothing to do with this thread, but Pappys53, asked me where I was located in an E-mail on this site.

I am in Mountain Home, AR. If I remember correctly, you are up close to Kansas City. I was in Spring Hill, Kansas a month or so ago with my truck club at a cruise in.
