I could not remove the hairpin clip from the regulator pin to allow for side glass removal. The steel roller‘s slots that the hairpin rides in had worn creating a sharp edge that preventing pulling the hairpin out to release the pin.

Naturally, this again called for force which promptly snapped the hairpin. Where I live hairpins are just about as prevalent as bobby pins, so I had to improvise.

I found that a small office spring clip that holds papers together has a diameter of .050 verses the .046 diameter of the original hairpin. The steel from the office clip is also spring steel so it makes for a good replacement. I few twists and turns with pliers to follow the curves of the original and presto, I was back in business.

Have you tried a windshield repair place? They seem to be able to do miracles with cracked windshieds (which are a ticket offense here in CA). Can youget the insurance Company to pay for it and have it installed at a shop?
Hey guys finally I can add something to this great forum. I had a windshield repair company for 7 years. Yes you can repair cracks in glass but only in laminated glass. I assume since your rear window didnt explode on impact, it just cracked, its laminated. Find a local windshield repair, (repair) guy and have him take a look at it. Windshield replacement guys most of the time don't repair, they say they do but they don't. If you have any problems send me a picture of the crack and I can tell you if its repairable. If it's repairable I believe windshield repair is still free in arizona (no deductable).
Thanks Guys but I do not believe the window is repairable since there are a number of cracks from where I hit it with the rubber hammer. Lesson learned. I have the old clear big back glass that I can reinstall but my goal was for the dark tint. I got the dark side/vent windows in and they look great.
I did some research on how cracks are repaired and long cracks seem to be the most difficult. They have a video on-line that shows someone mixing a concoction of bug repellant, salt, and rubbing alcohol and brushing it on a long crack. They then used time acceleration to show the crack disappearing as it cured in the sun.
Luckily, I didn't have any liquid bug repellant or I would have given it a try!
wow, I use an amber colored resin mixed with a little bit of acid to etch the glass. I only repair certain kinds of cracks but I get them to about 85% clarity when they are completed. A normal stone chip like a star or round bubble no larger than a dime I can make it almost disapear about 97% clarity.
