hello guys
looking for my first ford project truck ( trail & mud slinger) need some help
what is the last year f-150's had solid axles or is their other years that are more popular to do up? 60s 70s early 80s... 250s / 350s
Ford hasn't had a solid axle in the F-150 since 1981...or was it 1983? Pretty sure 1981 though. In 1982 they introduced the TTB independant front suspension. That was in use until 1996 (1997 for Superduty).
TTB is a semi-solid axle setup...the axle is in 2 peices and looks like an "X". Actually is a pretty good setup.
You can do a solid axle swap into the 82-96 F-150 fairly easily though. Just need the axle from a 70's Ranger/Bronco/F-150 and the radius arms, control arm.
but if you are wanting to build a Ford trail truck, a 70's F-150/Ranger is the way to go. Solid axle, heavy duty drivetrain and a big block bolts in relatively easily
The best project i ever tackled for that is a 78 f150. Had the dana 44/9" combo. c6 tranny, that thing was stout. Just got rid of it last wednesday. Theres some pics in my gallery of it.
1979 was the last year for a solid axle in the F150 4x4s.
It's a relatively easy swap to put a '73-'78 solid axle in the '80-'96 F150s.
Yup, I did that swap on an 84 F250 using all Ford parts and perches that I made. I had to cut and rotate a drag link to hook the steering up, but that was easy.
I would start with an F250 as suggested, but the first mod would be to change the steering to a crossover system. The steering arm system with hydraulic assist sucked on a good day, once you start lifting and modifying, it becomes a royal pain to deal with.
Also beware of some 76-77 1/2ton 4x4s, they had a y-steering linkage, where the drag link ran to the right knuckle, and the tie rod to the left knuckle came off the middle. Horrible bump steer, and very hard to keep aligned. A surprising number of companies used this system, too.
