Finally got some sunshine to mess with the truck today.
heavy, I'd guess about 2 quarts of water.
I pulled the PS rocker cover, and sure enough... everything in there is dry as a martini. I started it up for a minute, and nothing came out.
I pulled the dis, but I didn't have anything small enough to fit down in there.
I re-checked the oil filter, still dry.
Looks like I'll have to pull the Y-pipe off to drop the pan and do the oil pump.
One thing I did notice, and maybe you guys can explain...
Right next to the housing for the oil filter is a metal tube a couple inches long pointed upwards, with the end crimped flat. I would have guessed it was for a dipstick; but mine comes out of the oil pan and about 8 inches more rearward. Did someone break the dipstick tube and then just punch one in the pan?
x2 on it being the dipstick tube. It's easy to put a 4x4 pan on a 2wd block, and use the dipstick for the rear sump pan.
I have five blocks that are drilled for the front sump oil pan, and one that is not. Makes me think that Ford meant for that block to be used with a rear sump pan.
Edit: I guess another exception might be a block destined for use in an FT application. I guess I should get off this ol' confuser and tear down that 4x4 engine/tranny/transfer case sitting on the garage floor, see what I have.
Mike are you saying some blocks didn't get the dipstick tube hole? I never knew that if so? I've had service blocks with the hole plugged but never not there?
Why would the tube be there and cut and crimped short? Could this motor originally have come from a 2wd truck? This is 4wd, so they would have had to change the oil pan? My pan has a real deep sump in the back, just like the one in the 360 rebuild thread.
My thought was I'd have to drop the Y-pipe, and the pan should come down okay. Might have to reach up and unbolt the pickup tube before it comes all the way out. That sound about right?
FYI, when I pulled the diz, there did seem to be a decent amount of oil on the diz gear and shaft. THAT'S weird.

Whoops! I stand corrected.
I just went and scraped away more grime to find an orange plug of RTV. My bad!

Mine came with the front sump pan still on it, self clearanced by the front differential.

You might have to lift the front of the truck, or the engine to get a little more room between the block and axle. I remember cussing a lot the last time I did this on the truck. The last time I swapped the pan, the engine was on a stand, much easier. LOL
I appreciate everyone's input. Sorry I've been quiet... been a heck of a week.
Dropped off the equipment at a job site Monday night to start a lot clearing job, and a woman went off the road and totaled my Dakota. Pretty cut-and-dried as far as the insurance goes, but still took up the free time I had planned on spending on the truck. Figures! (I suppose it could have been worse... my Mack or my whole tree chipper could have been hit!)
Anyhow, hopefully Sunday I'll get the chance to start oulling the pan off. I'll keep y'all posted on what I find.
