Thought my latest experience would amuse you all. One my way home tonight i had a rich kid in a mid 2000's dodge rev his engine at me, so in the spirt of fun i reved back(thinking a newer model 24valve would beat me) and we took off when the light changed. And well I left him behind while i heard that cummins scream after me. Needless to say i was grinning.
i can outrun my buddies 99 24v with ease, several truck lengths. its a 2500, extended cab long bed. he has 5 inch exhaust, intake, and the edge comp box.
I've always had a hard time understanding how these Dodges are getting beat so often by the PSD's, because the numbers I've seen show that the Cummins far surpass the PSD's in both HP and torque. However, it was recently explained to me by someone who did just this very thing that, in his case, the Dodge simply couldn't get enough fuel, while his PSD was rolling plenty of coal with a three truck-length lead. So I'm wondering, is this the reason in all cases?
from my personal experiences with the cummins, they have the same similar issue that we have in the powerstrokes. you can chip them all you want..... their injectors just dont flow the fuel required. you have to upgrade the fuel system and the injectors on the 24v's to get anywhere. my buddies truck with the comp box doesnt even smoke, just a puff and a very light haze and thats on extreme. now another friend at work put stage 4 injectors in his(175hp i think is what he said) and that thing really moves out. i would put that truck up with the stage 2's in our trucks. he was pushing 45 psi boost and lots of egt's. had to put a holley blue pump on it to keep the fuel moving to the main pump, the stock one couldnt handle it.
I'd stick with the 12V and the Bosch P7100 pump and you wouldn't have any "fueling" issues. The only thing that beats the 7100 is the SIGMA and they run $10K plus!
I'm not a big 24V fan, too many things to modify and too much money to get the power. '94-early '98 12V is the way to go, for a Cummins.
The other dotch missfall is the auto trans. It's just junk.
I'd be worried against a 5 speed, not an auto.
Depending on if the idiot can shift or not.
Only reason I think people go for doges is the Cummings engine.
The rest of the truck isn't to great. The interior blows on almost all dodges, and they don't have a solid Auto Trans.
Anybody I know with big miles on their Cummings has a stickshift.
Kevin, a fellow shearer, is trying to kill his second Cummings. The first one is retired with 350k
And this one has 280k.
Yeah, mine looks like "Mater" just from sitting in the driveway.
Hood fell off, tranny cracked in half, tires all went flat, rearend exploded, seats melted, etc., basically it's just a big pile of crap mounded around the engine. You know how it goes with them crummy Dodges.
If you want the real story: I've put a rear wheel cylinder and an alternator on it and it's 18 years old.
Do you HAVE to hate Dodges to like Fords?
Maybe I'm an anomily?
Why is it an insult to Fords to NOT slam Dodges?
I think it's fun to rib the "other guy" but I don't want to REALLY insult thier choice in a truck. It just pisses them off and hate "your" brand and the guys who own/drive them.
NOW to be clear I DON'T think that way, I don't really care as I'm secure in my preferences Ford or Dodge. I don't care what the Dodge guys say about my Fords either.
MY PROBLEM IS: if someone comes on a site looking to research a truck, Ford Chevy or Dodge they get turned off a lot of times by the brand bashing. It's kind of like negative campaighning, it can blow-up in your face.
I've seen it happen, one guy logged on to a Dodge site I used to frequent. TOO MANY guys told him how Fords were a big piece of crap and anyone who would buy one was dumber than pond scum etc.
He thanked all of the guys that actually helped him and then said he would never buy a Dodge because too many of the owners were "idiotic, condecending jerks!"
I don't think those guys HELPED anybody.
Just something to think about.
I like my Fords, Dodges, Jeeps, Internationals and most of my GM trucks. I base that on my OWN experiences and the advice from fair minded guys. They also have their preferences but will give you an honest answer like "I don't have any first hand knowlege about that but the reputation is....."
