thanks. i wasnt sure if it was a 3 or a 4. in my old CJ5 it had a D18 or T18 something like thar and everyone always refered to it as a 3spd, granny low. and as far as my truck goes you pretty much have top take off in low or it just bogs down (stupid 38's, lol) and 4th gear is pretty much useless under 55mph
t-18 is the borg warner granny low transmission. thats what my f250 has in it too.
full length 302 headers won't work, trust me i went through that! and i ended up using late 80s mustang stock shorty headers, you got to get the ones with the nickel stainless steel alloy headers, they last forever! plus there cheap, and you can then route the exhaust to meet the headers, the full length headers run into the front drive shaft! i have the stock 80's ford shorty headers bolted on my truck right now, i just have to get my dad to bend the exhaust tubing up to the headers and get some trick magnaflow mufflers! and some nice stainless tips with dual pipes in front of the rear tires on each side! and i might put flamethrower kit in to boot!
hate to keep beating a dead horse, but i was looking at the truck today and the driverside looks almost impossible to put a standard shorty header (from like a stang) on. it almost drops straight down between the last 2 cylinders and the "Z" bar would be in the way for a rear exit header. the stock manifold goes down and connects to the exhaust which runs under the oil pan to the passenger side. now my question is (and forgive me for my ignorance) will a set of headers from a full size bronco work? i found set that say they are designed to clear the clutch and steering linkage and the pictures look like they might work. Early Bronco Ford exhaust systems, ceramic and metal headers, dual exhaust systems, V8 header, kit, bolts what do yall think. there has to be atleats one person out there with a 4x4 truck with a 302 and headers, right?
The headers off of an early model bronco will not work either i tried it last year and it failed. They dump right out on top of the drive shaft. There is a couple of older threads on this if you search for them. I gave up and stuck with the manifolds.

Mine had a six on it when i tried I am not joking when I say it drops right down on the driveshaft. I had to take the driveshaft out of my truck to put the headers on then when I tried to reinstall it was a hopeless cause that is why I am take it out and putting a 351C in it this time.
i plan on getting a exhaust tube bent to reach up to the stock mustang shorty headers, heck you can go any way you want! it will be tight around the front drive shaft, but it can be done, trust me i have my stock 80s headers bolted in my 77 f150 4x4 with a 302 and AOD tranny, and the exhaust pipe can be bent to fit, i will post pictures when i have the exhaust tube bent and installed.
