so first off im new here, so howdy. just got my first truck ever at the age of 23. its a 77 f150 custom 4x4 stepside with a 302 and 3spd. truck has 8" spring upfront, 4" spring and 3" block in the rear and a 3" body lift with 38.5 tsl boggers. im looking for a set of headers (preferably longtube) but i cant seem to find any for this particular truck. i can find them for a 2wd, but they say cant be used with a lift kit. so my questions are, a.) is this an uncommon truck that i have? and b.) does anybody make a header for this truck? now like i said i prefer to use a LT, but if i cant find any could i use a set of shorties off of a mustang? also i was under the assumption that all these trucks had the twin i-beam setup, well mine doesnt. it also has a dana 44 front, would this be stock? thanks
The problem is the 4x4 trucks never came factory with a 302 so the aftermarket doesnt list anything that works. There are so many vehicles with 302's and there should be enough header combinations that something should work. I have a 79 F-150 with a 302 4sp and Ive got manifolds. Id like to get headers but its not high on my list of things to do. Hopefully someone had added headers before and can provide us with a part number.
Edit: As for the twin I beam deal thats for the 2wd trucks until the 80's when the 4x4s came out with independant front suspensions.

not to be argumentive but are you absolutely positve about the 302? cause a local ford guy read my vin and said it was a factory 302 4x4 step side., he could be wrong. but the motor has definatley been out, it has a small cam and has a farily fresh paint job, so there is no telling. as for the twin i beam my neighbor has a 68 2wd and he made the comment about it, and i was just wondering. thanks for your input though. greatly appreciated
Yip Im 110% certain the 302 was not offered in a 4x4 before the 80's. Post your VIN on here. Maybe the cab and body came from a 2wd and were swaped onto the 4x4 frame? Or maybe someone converted a 2wd into 4wd?
I bought a set of dynomax long tube headers for my 78 2x4 with a 302,I realize your is a 4x4 but I have had 4x4 dentsides before and I would guess that they would fit no problem,I would say that you shouldn't have any clearance issues.and they are a nice heavy set and a good price.

did the 2wd have mounts or brackets right next to the front 2 cylinders? thats the only thing i see that could ne causing a problem. also forgive me for not knowing, but are yall referring to my truck as a dent side because i said it was step side, or is that a common name for all ford trucks of this era because of the grove down the side of the body?

73-79 are called dentsides for the groove as you say, 67-72s are called bumpsides for the same reason only reversed. haha
Welcome! As far as the titlework goes, don't sweat it too much. As long as the VIN on the title and the VIN stamped on the frame rail are the same, you're good to go. I think my insurance company said my truck's VIN tells them F100, but it decodes to F150, so their info is inaccurate. Your VIN (F14) is F150 4X4, so it was not converted from 2wd, however, as has been said, the 302 is the converted part. The trouble with headers for these is a combination of steering box location differences between 2wd and 4X4 and the front driveshaft/tcase situation. I have yet to find a set of longtubes that don't interfere with one or both of these problems. I have not tried a set of shorties, however, and may look at that alternative sometime. The other thing of interest to me about your truck is the 3-spd/4X4 combo. I guess I was not aware of this arrangement. Has the shifter been moved to the floor to compensate for the body lift, or does it have custom-built shift rods?
noco77 I never took into consideration the steering box on the 4x4,but the front d/s primaries go back almost as soon as they leave the flang so I think he might be alright with the 302,and they run nicely along the engine and stay tight to the cab with the collectors stopping right around the shift linkage.they may or may not fit but when I build my 4x4 I am confident enough they will that I'll be buying another set for that truck.but a set of shorty stock 5.0 mustang headers aren't alot bigger then the stock manifolds that came of my truck,I still have my manifolds and a set of stock 5.0 headers and if you think this will be any help to you I can take some pictures of the two side by side and post them here for you over the weekend.

that would be awesome, and as for the steering box mine is in front of the drivers wheel, so i dont see it being a problem.
