Has anyone had to remove and/or replace the running boards on their Expy? Mine is a 2000 Eddie Bauer, with the biege running boards with lights. I'm needing to replace one side, with identical Ford parts (due to a run-in with another object).
I can either buy a full running board assembly at the dealer, for about $535, or just the "skin" cover, plus the underlying metal "board", as separate parts for some savings. (the lights still work, so presumably they can be transferred from old to new).
It appears to be a pretty straightforward unbolt and bolt-on job, although obviously if I buy the separate piece parts then I also need to disassemble the running board assembly and put it back together again.
Are there any tricks in doing this, in terms of disconnecting the wiring for the lights, removing the lights, or un-hooking things once the bolts are removed?
The good news is that the brackets that attach the running board to the frame/body all seem to be basically fine, and there was no apparent damage to the body itself.
Even if you've replaced your stock running boards with other things, like bars, I'd be interested in any feedback that anyone has. Thanks!
I replaced my 97 Expedition running boards due to a gouge. Its a piece of cake. Just unplug the lights(will need to be wired tied up later due to sag) Unbolt everything you need. Pop out light if needed. Bolt back up. I was able to hold the running board up when reinstalling with my foot to get some of the bolt treads started.
I did make one mistake. On the new boards I got there was a piece of colored channel that I took off before reinstalling them on my truck. Once they were installed there was a gap right under the bodyline and the board that looked stupid. So I had to redo everthing to get it to look correct.

Cobra - thanks for the tips! I have a couple of quick questions, though. Did you leave the angle-brackets on the car body, and unbolt the running board from them? Or did you unbolt the brackets-with-board from the body/frame, as a unit? After doing it, would you recommend buying the complete running board assemply, or just the skin and underlying metal board as separate pieces? (I need the underlying metal board, since it was dented pretty good. But the combined cost of these two pieces is still more than $150 cheaper than the combined board.
Thanks also to madsonp, who pointed out a used running board assembly on eBay. But I'm probably going to buy the piece parts as new items, in part because after paying for shipping, the cost savings from the eBay part are not that great. (The assembly on eBay is pictured with all of the angle brackets attached, which accounts for my question, above.)
Oh, one final question - to unplug the lights, is it a connector in the wiring at the frame end? Or is it unplugging it right at the running board? (In other words, does the wire pigtail stay with the car, or stay with the running board?).
I unbolted the entire board from the truck. I found it easier to work on in that condition. Its pretty self explanatory and should be easy for you. Its up to you what you want to buy. I replaced the entire running board itself. But after having it off the truck if I recall correctly it didnt look that hard to replace what you need.I just look under my truck and the metal piece you need doesnt look at all difficlut to remove just alot more nuts.
The light unplugs right near the front tire thru a connector and powers both lights. The plug stays with the truck .The light should just pop out and onto another running board.
I got my running board from a bodyshop friend of mine. He also gave me just the covers which I put away in my shed for later. BUT before I rodent proofed the shed chipmunks ate both boards. Awesome!
