When I get the body off the frame, what does everyone suggest for cleaning up the frame and painting. I want it to look good without putting me in the poor house
Can Do
On a budget, power wash the heck out of it and then wire brush all the loose flaky rust off and get yourself some Rust Bullet or Chassis Saver paint. You can either brush it on or spray it on over the rust. That's what it's made for. You may want to look into having it sandblasted though. I'm not sure about what's in your area, but it doesn't take very long to do and even if someone charges you $100 an hour or something that's about how long it takes with a good blaster and money well worth it.
I have done 2 frames with a grinder with a wire wheel and brushed on rustoleum. It is cheaper than stuff like POR15, and in my experience, just as good.
Would like to get one sandblasted, but never quite bring myself to do it.
Sandblast if you can. I done mine but my buddy had all the equipment. It cost me $50 in coal slag to blast it. If you use a pressure pot you will need one big air compressor. He has a big diesel pull behind. You can rent these but buy the time you pay for rental you can have someone else do it. I have used the ones that siphon the sand from a bucket with my 60 gal. compressor and it worked ok. but was slow. It only takes about an hour to do with the pressure pots. And I sprayed it with rustolum through a cheap gravity feed gun for oil base paint.
Well around here blasting a frame would cost about $100, then a block down the road the powder coater will put a satin black finish on it for $150-$200. Well worth the money
Wow! the company around here charge $500 & up to do a frame. and they don't even kiss us.-RW

The idea of sand blasting sounds like money well invested. If I can find a place to powder coat, what must I do to prep the frame for this. Or should I say, a coat of primer?
Can Do
Sandblasting is the prep for powder coating... The application of powder is very simple. Filtered, compressed air, usually at 20-30 psi pushes the powder out of the gun past the electrode which gives the powder a positive charge. The part being coated is grounded so the positive powder particles are attracted to it. When the part is completely covered, the ground is removed and the part is put into the oven to cure at a high temperature, the end result is a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. I had the running boards on my truck done this way and the finish is amazing, the shop that did it assured me that this is one of the most durable finishes available, and that it doesn't flake like paint. I have only had them for about 6 months but am thus far very impressed and plan on doing my frame, axle housings, and anything else on the underside of my truck that looks like it would benifit from the coating. Btw- If you don't want to sand blast it a grinder will do the trick, as long as you have a bare metal surface for effective bonding, primer would actually have to be removed, just be careful with the frame in bare metal as it will be prone to flash rusting.
