Speaker suggestions

The speakers in my 2002 Expedition are starting to crackle. I think my Metallica CD's are starting to take their toll. I have the Premium stereo system from the factory. I don't want to alter anything, like adding subs or extras. I'd like a good replacement speaker for the front doors. The stock ones lasted a long time and I'd have no hesitancy in getting the OEM replacements, but wanted to see what everyone else is using or has used. Alpine, JVC, Sony, Pioneer...whatever. Thanks!

For stock replacement your going to have to do some home work. Most aftermarket speakers will prefer to be powered, and will sound much better being pushed by an amp. The Ford Premium speakers are pretty good for the amount of power they handle.

To be powered from the head unit, look at the high end brands. I think Memphis Audio had a lot of quality speakers that ran decent SN with low (50 watts or so) power requirements. Find some that are spec'd with low power handling and high signal to noise, probably 90 or better to be as good as the stocks. My rears atleast handle down to 100Hz (though not that well), so you'll want a speaker with a response range of say 100-20kHz. Also you need to be mindful of the impedance. I haven't measured mine, but I'd suspect 4ohm and for some reason I am thinking 6ohm which can't be right.

ReAX, interesting info to consider. Thanks for the reply. It's been awhile since I messed with upgrading stereos in my old cars & trucks, so I'm a little rusty, but your info helps to clear the cobwebs.

Boston Accoustics makes a nice low watt Ford replacement speaker (5x7). I gave about 120$ a pair for my F250. Ten times better than stock.

I got my Crutchfield catalog on Friday and they are running a special on all Boston Accoustics speakers. I never really considered them, as I thought they were strictly a speaker designed for bands. I'll look at what they have to offer, as well. Thanks for all the replies. The crackle isn't as noticable anymore, but it still comes and goes.

Boston had made one of my list for consideration too, the power handing and range were in line with objectives. They weren't bad priced either. However, I don't recall many in low power range. If you end up with 100w or more speakers, they will sound much better and louder with an amp.

Speaker damage shouldn't come and go, unless you started listening to a lower volume. You may want to check your connections. Crutchfield should give you adapters that plug into the stock harness, but it you have a loose connection in the stock harness replacing the speakers will not help.

Why not try Q-Customs Factory-fit Vehicle Specific Speaker and Subwoofer Box? I heard it's great and definitely one of the latest today.

Some vendors stopped carrying them. I picked up the last set offered by one of the big distributors for my Superduty. I am not sure I am completely sold on the idea, the plastic is somewhat thin and will probably resonate if you use a high powered 6.5 or 5.25" woofer. The main reason I liked them was changing the location and direction of the speakers. Hopefully when I get speakers to fill them, it will set the sound stage better than the stock speaker location which I tend to have my knee blocking most of the time.
