I have to agree 100% about the Barret-Jackson theory. These people are getting the idea that their stuff is worth a mint and think they are going to get it. Dave, I have to agree your offer to him was probably was fair. Just by the pictures I'd say almost everything on the trucks are rusted pretty bad and you would spend a fortune to make one good truck from parts off both. If your looking a panel? You will find one that's not so need of work and challenging. The old saying still holds true "You Get What You Pay For". Yes, there are still people "Pack Ratting" these old vehicles in hopes of getting good money for them. There is a side of me that says that ok, but I remember over 20 years ago there was a old guy who had probably a dozen 53-56 trucks and tons of parts. He would sell stuff but he wanted more than the stuff was selling for new/remanufactured . He ended up dying and the state got the land and trucks.........
Dylan,
There seems to be two distinct camps on this issue. There are the ones who as you say think their stuff is worth the high prices, (probably in part to a misguided influence of the Barret-Jackson thing, as well as people who support them by paying those too-high prices). The other camp is the rest of us who know what it really takes to make something decent out of junk. We are also limited by reality as well as avaiable funds. Fortunately, those who participate in this forum and other similar ones seem to be of the second camp. This begs the question, where do these other peole get together and network? I would like to know in order to learn their justification and rationalization. I wouldn't mind tapping into that resource. If they have that kind of money to spend on trash, I would like to get in on the harvest. It would sure help my retirement income.
As for the panel trucks, they were very rusty but when I looked them over close, I found it was mainly surface rust and not very much rust through. There was also a lot of good glass and aside from the one missing the rear doors, they seemed to be complete. Still, I think the 500@ offer was prety much a maximum reasonable .offer because I am sure I would be looking for parts. I don't really need them. I just thought it was a way to get a good start on collecting enough to build one after I finished my '53.
The one without doors is the only one I'd even drag out of the field, the other is too far gone to even be good for parts, but good doors could cost more than he was asking for both trucks. The rear doors were not removable except by removing the hinge pins.
If you equate the overgroath to his price it's obvious that he should have come down a bit a LONG time ago. Sometimes people still have the mental picture of when they aquired the vehicle and price it by that.....but if you hold them too long they return to mother earth-one body panel at a time!

I agree but in spite of all that the guy is selling and making money. To me the main issue is why people are willing to pay so muck for crap.
