Back to the yard...

Hi Everyone,
Last week I posted a thread about finding a place full of old cars and trucks, ( see https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...tion-help.html ) Today my son and I went back there as I wanted to see about making a deal on two '54 Ford panel trucks. CLICK HERE to see the pictures of the trucks. IT was a pleasant outing and good for a lot of Father-Son bonding but as far as successes go, it was a bust. I was hoping to make an offer of $1,000.00 for the pair but I was way off base. The guy said he wanted $2,200.00 for the first one and $1,800.00 for the second with no rear doors and no titles for either because there are no titles for anything older than a '63 model in Georgia.

You guys be the judge. I think this guy is way off on his prices. Take a look at the pictures. I am used to finding the '53 F-100s in this condition or better for $500.00 or less.

In my earlier post I was attempting to avoid publishing this guys location because I thought he was one of those guys who didn't want to be bothered. Later I found that he has a webpage and is selling this stuff on ebay and even shipping some of it overseas. his website is Old Car City - Home and there is a way to take a virtural tour of what he has. So have at it guys, maybe you can get a better deal than I could there.

If the prices he is asking are realistic I think I better start buying at my prices and selling at his. Like I said, maybe I'm just an un-realistic cheap SOB. This guy is getting 2K plus for stuff I can stick my hand through.

Later Folks...

I've linked to that website some years ago on here. The cars rotting one. Now to see if he is indeed selling everything from that site, I have to say no way will I buy anything from there. For one, I'm too far away, lol....but 2, I don't think his prices are realistic, IMO. I mentioned to Bob jones a couple years ago about a 48 panel rust free, though taken apart for $1500. That sounds more realistic to me.

Thanks Scott,
Maybe I'm not so crazy. What bugs me is that he's getting that kind of money for really rusted out stuff. It would be too far away for me also, except that I end up making runs bringing cars down here and then I deadhead back. I thought if I cut a deal here I could leave it at my son's place and drag them back when I'm going back empty.

I guess I'm getin' way ahead of myself here. I started looking at panels and I was thinking one would make a great compliment to my '53 F-100 pickup. Now that I have the disease I guess I'll be on the hunt.

That guy had a '53 Merc 2DHT like the one I had in high school. After hearing what he wanted for the panel trucks, I just couldn't bear the rejection of hearing what he wanted for the car. Since I have a special weakness for it I would Mmerc and move it. It was pretty rust free too.

Ah yes, a '53 Merc. I have yet to see a 2dr go for cheap. Or a '51 Pontiac for that matter, or a KB panel wagon, or a 1940 Ford pickup. So I settled on what I put in my signature, though I'm still looking for a 42-47 merc pickup or panel. And yes, it is a disease, and you'll be on the hunt, lol. I think we all are.

Yeah, you are right, once I get it in my head there is no stopping me until I find it. I have no justification what so ever for having stuff like this and the truth be known, I'd probably be better off with out this stuff.

This is the ''53 Merc.

Dave,

I'm with you, his stuff seems to me to be way overpriced. I've found stuff around here in better shape that I could get for the same price. I think he might be one of the many people I have mentioned before who have gotten iron oxide mixed up with gold. If he's selling those buckets at those prices more power to him.

Those prices are way too high. It amazes me alot of times when I see some of the prices people want for this old trucks/cars in such rough condition. I often wonder to myself if people really pay those prices and if thats why they think they can get such high $ for such rusty buckets.

Apparently they do get them and I wonder if it is from people who know little or nothing about what it takes to bring these things back. I have to think there must be more than a few that are given up on or resold at a great loss for something near or less than they are worth.

Naaaaahhh, this guys prices are way out of bounds, Dave.

I only paid $1500 for my 51 F1 Five Star Deluxe that was running and had little rust - and that was in Southern California!

I think $500 was reasonable to offer.

Yep, that's more inline with what I usually look for price wise.

No arguement here Julie, but the fact remains that they are getting those high prices. He had the rusty remains of a '67 fast back Mustang with no front end and no drive train or rear axel. They were sending it to Germany and getting $2,200.00 for it. The interior was all but gone and the glass was trash. To add insult to injury, the customer also wanted an old six banger Chevy engine that they crammed inside it with a forklift. I saw them do it. My daughter-in-law does exports and she said it would cost more than the $2,200.00 to get it in a container and ship it.

The main thing that amazes me is that while we are in the midst of an economic melt-down of sorts, people keep buying all this stuff at high prices. From what I am seeing, Barret-Jackson, ebay and even Craig's list seem to be doing about the same as far business is concerned. I don't see any big discounts being offered in any of those areas. Places like Mid-Fifty and LMC truck still have about the same or higher prices. Even the bone yards are still high. I can only assume that although I am seeing extreme high prices holding, that in fact this sector is actually a very small portion of the overall economic picture.

As a sideline business, I transport classic and custom cars. Although I always get people trying to haggle for a better deal on transporting, they end up going with my price even though they could settle for open and/or multiple transport option at a considerably lower price. I am starting to wonder what point in this economic decline will have to be reached to drastically effect this market.

The guys I talked with at this antique junkyard individaully confirmed that they were indeed getting their asking prices. There were at least ten people buying stuff in the brief two hour period I was there.

I have to agree 100% about the Barret-Jackson theory. These people are getting the idea that their stuff is worth a mint and think they are going to get it. Dave, I have to agree your offer to him was probably was fair. Just by the pictures I'd say almost everything on the trucks are rusted pretty bad and you would spend a fortune to make one good truck from parts off both. If your looking a panel? You will find one that's not so need of work and challenging. The old saying still holds true "You Get What You Pay For". Yes, there are still people "Pack Ratting" these old vehicles in hopes of getting good money for them. There is a side of me that says that ok, but I remember over 20 years ago there was a old guy who had probably a dozen 53-56 trucks and tons of parts. He would sell stuff but he wanted more than the stuff was selling for new/remanufactured . He ended up dying and the state got the land and trucks.........
