Hi everyone....hoping you can give me a clue on this problem. Here goes...When I am making a left or right turn I feel a thumping on the floorboard right under my left foot when its flat on the floor. I can feel something moving when I make a turn...no noise or anything...just a movement I can feel on the floorboard. Any suggestions?
I know it sounds dumb but have u taken a flashlight and gave everything a good look? If everything appears normal then have someone hop in and turn the wheels back and forth a few times while your looking at everything.. if there is vibration or knocking.. try to pinpoint it!
Mine did something similar and it was the sway bar link that had broken.. not sure if this is your case because it may be one of a number of things!
thanks for the info...there is no vibration and its not noisy. I can just feel something moving around down on the floorboard there when I turn the steering wheel to make either a left or right. You mentioned "sway bar link"? What was your vehicle doing when you discovered that. Was it expensive to replace?
it may be a lower ball joint. jack the tire up 2 inches off the ground with a jack under each A frame, not the main frame. then put a 4 ft 2 x 4 edge under the tire and lift up and down to see how much movement there is in the lower joint.
The say bar links are inexpensive and you woud want to replace both while your at it.. I'm gonna take a guess on the cost but i believe i picked up a complete set and were heavier duty than the OEM ones for around $40.. If u look in behind the tires u will see a steel round bar with bushings on both ends..
My vehicle was doing something similar and especially and almost only when i made turns.. my ride quality was slightly worse and once i replaced and got the new ones in it was improved alot.. if this happens to be your sway bar link let me know and i can give you a few suggestions as to how to install and tweek them to the ride and handling quality you are after!
here is a picture of what the sway bar links look like and if like on my 00 X EB AWD.. they should be almost perfectly vertical ( Up and down )! that should help u find them!
Something else to think about is a CV joint. Since you said it is "thumping" it makes me think about something that is consistent with the motion of the vehicle. If it was a sway bar I think it might be thump or two or a popping noise. I would say jack the front end up and spin the wheels while having someone turn them.
