I'm the proud owner of a 56 Merc. I got it free from a buddy. It needs alot but it's also a Merc. My son went to autobody school and this is going to be our low buck project. I bought a 300 six with auto trans and steering pump fan and pretty much complete set up for 150.00. The truck came with a Volare front clip. In one of the threads I read about a Volare pattern to lay on your frame to know where to cut and hack. I couldn't find it again......does someone know who sells this template/pattern?
Has anyone put in a 300 six with Volare?
Thanks for the help.

Oh yea....the truck has a 283 with camelback heads and 4 barrel stock carb setup. Also has powerglide tranny and 12 bolt rear. All for sale.
I would not recommend installing the Volare clip, there are too many better options available today. John Niolon has a good article on this forum about Volare IFS and why he REMOVED the clip from his truck in favor of an aftermarket MII IFS, it's worth a read. Personally I just rebuilt the Volare IFS in one of my trucks, some parts are readily available and others are as rare as hen's teeth. As far as the I6 engine, the Volare will support that engine probably better than a V8 because there will be less obstruction from the power steering box.

Which parts did you have trouble finding? I just put mine together with no availability issues. Granted everything was special ordered since they didn't stock them, but at the most I had a 3 - 4 day wait.
As I said LOW BUCK ....I could build this truckrod with the stuff I have obtained for the price of a Heidt's MII. Thanks for the info tho. I did read the thread about the clip switch. But getting a kid involved for a few thousand is more my game. Isn't that what us elders are suppose to do, get the youngsters involved with old iron?
Granted the Volare is butt-ugly, but it is better than the straight axle.
If anyone has a pic of the 300 six install or if there is one in one of the threads on the group ...please guide me there.

Try finding parts that are not meant to be consumable...torsion bar bushings (come with the torsion bar attached) or how about the power steering fluid return valve assembly that mounts to the top of the steering box (the one that does not come with a rebuilt PS box). I realize that folks in other parts of the country may have more wrecking yards than we do here in SoCal and thus have more access to old car parts, but I have yet to have anyone step up with a power steering fluid return valve assembly. These things are made out of pot metal and don't take much use/abuse before they fail.
My point on this topic is that there are many of us who have trucks with decades old Volare IFS installs, we make do...but given the choice, I personally would not put one in my truck today given the options available for other far better IFS systems.
i have a 51 f1..78 chrysler torsion bar....love it.....worst time i had was making the drivers side motor mount....but your frame is about 2 inches wider at the front section, so i don't think thats a major issue on the 53 and above.
i have a 383 stroker in mine...why pull that cool 283 for the I6....probably won't be a lot better gas mileage and...just my opinion.i love the look of a v8 under the hood....
anyway, i have the templates i made for mine when i installed my clip...not that hard a job, if your careful and make sure...sure...sure your measurements are correct...on the 53 and above, you you need to move the centerline forward and inch and a half...(i would double check and verify that, but i believe its correct)...... i'm leaving in about two hours to go to airport to go on vacation..will return next weekend...i will check and see if you still need the templates,
if you do, i will send them to you....sorry, i just don't have time right now..
tks, ashlandcat-louisville kentucky...

Which torsion bar bushings? The ones between the bar and control arm or the ones between the bar and frame. I was able to get the ones between the bar and control arm from parts america. You have to remove the old ones and the new ones bolt on. Removal involves cutting the old ones off and drilling out the rivet.
As far as the valve, do they fail or just break? I removed the one from my old box for the reman box, but I may have another on a broken box.

The fluid return valve housing is very brittle and susceptible to breakage. The one that I have cracked, I didn't notice it until I was taking the valve off to put on a rebuilt steering box. After disassembly of the valve I also found that the spring and plunger were rusted...not something I would expect to see in normal use however but this box had been sitting in a chassis that was out in the weather for a number of years. If you have an extra valve assembly that you would part with I would be happy to buy it from you. Thanks...
Gotta go Ford with the motor....plus I've always liked the 300 six...so I guess I just want to do it. Everyone does a small block Ford or C#$%y. Plus my kid can have more money for other things in the build with selling the 283 and 12 bolt rear.
Thanks for the cons Charlieled. Good to know these things.
