My truck just started ticking a little bit at startup. Only for about 5 seconds and then it would stop. I was about 400 miles over my oil change (3000k). I went to pull the plug and about 3/4 of a quart came out. That was it!! I coudldnt beleieve my motor was still running. I put in the new oil and it runs great now, no ticking or knocking, so atleast i know i didnt do any kind of serious damage. But, this brings up a couple issues..
1. Shouldnt it have triggered some kind of low oil light, or atleast a drop in pressure??
2. Where did it go? My truck is dry as a bone underneath. I do not have 1 leak, and it does not smoke. It does have 156k on it...
if its not on the ground, u would bet on the PVC valve failed and sucked it up and burned. could be slow enought that you dont see smoke. check the valve.
---second, the idot gauge is an on- off gauge and not variable, if you got 8 psi, it turns on and reads o.k. not a real good gauge. check your oil every 500 miles for a while and see how it goes.
Do not be so sure. If it is definately not leaking it, its being burned in the engine. But if you travel the highway much, it will burn clean enough as to not foul plugs. The lack of oil promotes wear quite fast, so I believe it will increase oil loss , and it only takes seconds to do serious damage.
Well i meant atleast its not ticking anymore. Im sure it did some damage, just like to hope nothin major. I didnt think it was burning any oil. Ive never had this issue before and Ive had the truck for over 2 years now. All the motors ive even owned/seen that burned oil has always smoked so i never even thought about it.
Funny, same thing happened to me on my '92. I heard it start ticking from the front and thought I had a tensioner going out. I was also do for an oil change so I pulled the plug and maybe 2qts came out. I am pretty good at checking the level but must have driven more than I thought between checks.
The oil light won't come on until there isn't any pressure and as long as there is enough oil in the pan to be picked up there will be pressure.
Mine will burn some oil between changes.. probably about 2 qts, but I also have quite a few miles. I NEVER see mine smoking, so the amount of oil burning must be so small you cant see it in the exhaust.
