I spoke with garbz and told him about what the truck is doing. garbz said it sounds to him like a lifter going flat.
(what its doing)
Since Iv had it, its had this on and off ticking noise..like this:
quietly idling...(for 5 seconds).....tick tick tick tick tick tick-fades..........(5 more sec)................tick tick tick tick tick-fades............ and so on.
its only on one side, It dont do it all the time. More pronounced after being on the highway or a long stretch of some type. Sometimes it makes no noise at all for hours.
well...lol this is the question(s)....
How should I go about fixing this? Should I replace the whole cam, lifters, and bearings? or just drop in some new lifters? or what? The engine runs better than my 93 sable, it dont leak, smoke, or give any other bad indication other than the occasional ticking. so I dont really want or need to rebuild it at this time.
Rick, You can also have a wrist pin bushing failing. I would recomend that you start saving your coins for a rebuild and don't do anything short of a complete overhaul. You might look for a 390 and build it and swap it in when it is complete. You wont be disappointed in a 390.
My '66 F250 with the 300 six has the same "tick", and it seems to go away for long periods of time, too. It USED to be loud at high speed, like 60 mph on the road, but I changed the oil recently (think I used 20w-50), and there is no noise at high speed, and soft ticking occasionally at idle.
When I heard it at high speed, I thought Oh great, gonna need a rebuild soon, but now that it's gone away (for the most part), I ignore it. Even if it was still there, I concluded that it was a lifter, and a little rattle wouldn't cause too much harm.
Yours "sounds" to me like a lifter. And while there is I'm sure different design tolerances for "rattles" with hyd lifters than with solid, solid-lifter engines run forever with that tell-tale clacking at the rockers.
My old F100 with the 352 had a bad valve from the day I got it (idled rough but steady, ran like a top at higher speed), and I abused it for several years before I sold it running in the exact same condition. Not to argue with Jowilker, I'm sure he knows more than I do, but I bet your 352 will run a bit longer before you need a rebuild.
well..lol the reason I am wanting to know about all this is I am thinking seriously about going to that slick stock event. It is 400.28 miles from here. The last oil I used was Havoline 20w-50. I think it would make it no prob, but you know that little voice is always back there in my head talking crap. it does run beautifully though, other than the little in and out ticking. It only ticks at idle. while driving, no ticking ever.
when I first got the truck, it had sat for a while. only been drove a few thousand miles over the last couple years. It was leaking oil and trans fluid when I got it, but both of those conditions have dissapeared since I started driving it. they did a head job on it several years back lapping the valves and stuff. I have a list long as my legs on the maintence including brakes and past inspections and what not.
The dude sold it to me because he was just getting too old, and his health isnt so good anymore. He had it for about 30 years.
Any recommendations on what I should do before driving her 400 miles?..lol
Not to hijack your thread, but I just don't understand the ongoing fascination with the 390. I am trying to rebuild my truck and make it a nice daily driver. Why the need for the gas hog? My next project is already waiting, its a 65 with a 352. I don't plan to change it out either, maybe just a rebuild if needed. I have a 390 sitting on an engine hoist waiting for a new home (previous owner also thought he would drop in a 390 eventualy). So if they are so desirable, how much are they worth?Later
drof, The 390 seems to have hit more of the design points than any of the other FEs. The 410 a better puller (2 years), 428 largest of them all (limited use) the 352 and 360 (primarely used in trucks) but the 390 was introduced early on and was available at the end. The 390 was known to get better gas milage over the 352 when used in same body style cars. Lastly it puts more power to the ground.
Scwidvicious, if the truck runs that well with just a little tick at idle, 400 or 4,000 miles won't matter. I towed a 4,000 lb truck, with (2) motorcycles in the bed of my '65 F100 with the bad valve (and I'm sure some engine ticking, I probably ignored it) from LA, across the Rockies, to St. Louis with NO problem. That's a very durable engine, a little ticking doesn't mean catastrophic damage is imminent.
I recon I can just continue to drive her on as long as it dont get any worse, which it dont seem to be. Today I drove home on I-85 at 75+, and I think I will try to grab me up a nice 390 to rebuild for it.
lol, pic of the speedo on 75 in my gallery Feels kool having that big heavy sucker rollin like that. Sounds good too with that nice old school flowmaster 40 series on it. (out from under my cobra)
What kinda tranny/rear end do you have? I used to have a F100 with a 352 (don't know what rear end), and I remember having no problems maintaining highway speed.
My current '66 with a 300 six and 4.10 rear end is another story. I can go 65 all day long, and 70 easily (engine seems to rev up there OK), but the engine sounds like it's REALLY singin' !!
I thought about trying to find a 3.55 rear to swap in, but then my creeper speed would go up, and of all things, THAT is what is dictating my needs right now. I have a very hilly, tight yard that I'm using the truck to landscape, so that low crawl speed is more important. Too bad, I love driving it on the highway with my elbow sticking out the window.
Which is another point I'd like to point out; these "slicks" have to be the most comfortable trucks for driving with the window down and your arm on the door. It's almost as if they were designed with that in mind!!
I have the 3.25:1 rear and cruise-0-matic auto 3 speed (fmx)trans. I have not pushed that truck to 75 but once..lol usually keep it at around 65-70'ish on that highway. From town to here isnt but a few miles too. The speedo is about 3 miles slow as well, so 75 was actually 78..lol
I probably wont be able to make it this year, but there is always hope.
Rick, If your tires are in good shape, mash the gas and letter roll. Roll off all the numbers on the speedo and start for a second run. You shouldn't have any problems with your gearing.
