We're doing a Ford power build off. His 390 against my 460.
Hopefully dropping them into same style cars. Both ford muscle of course.
I think his original plan was to REbuild a 390.
I am building my 460 for power. Preformance parts all throughout.
In the end we're going to drag the two and see who wins. A friendly competition and if I can manage i'll build a wheelie car out of it. Its a life goal so its got to happen before I croak.
I read somewhere that the 88' 460 HP was 230 out of the factory. I can't confirm that though.
I am aiming for 600 ponies. =)
The block is the only thing that i'm keeping lol. Putting new heads on it. Aswell as the guts of the engine. Maybe a super charger. I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt it though. But if I were to use something like that it would be a super charger.
We'll see. I'm probably dumping more money into my 460 then he will his 390.
Well whoever 's gonna build the 390 quote unquote is NOT going to bore it too a 4.230" bore as the 427 specs...you can stroke it..and get bigger cubes.. But Like I said in my above post..Ya better have deep pockets if your gonna get some BIG power out of it !!
And a 466" 385 based motor wont take to much to get an easy 500hp and 500ftlbs of Tq... Its just a matter of easy bolt ons with a piston and cam change..and you can get the 500hp no problem at all....600hp your looking into some head work...JMO
Unlimited funds is what it will take to make the FE out run the 385 series motor. Like mentioned, he's got 70 cubes to start with. You'll have to build alot stouter motor, turn it harder to out run the 460. That's not even taking into consideration stroking either one, and the 460 still can be ALOT bigger.
Unless you put a power adder on the 390, it can't make the power the 460 can naturally aspirated.
I love my FE's, but you have to realize you're dealing with 60's technology. Your 390 might make 415 ci, maybe a few more? Even with really good heads, you'll have to really turn some major RPM to make enough power to get around a big cubic inch 460(514+ ci). Simple math.
Personally I think a stang with a 460 in it will have trouble biting and be hell to manage off the line. Then probably be slow winding up till the power can really be put to 100% use. JMO I'd vote do the 390 up to breath with a 4 speed and work out the traction/gears/tire size scenario. Probably be so close you couldn't tell. ????
Bobby I hav a bid that lives a few doors Down.. Glenn knows him , ...Now this guy cant drive worth a squat.. that has a 472"er (460 bored) in a Stang on a 10" tire, thats set-up for 1/8th mile pass's....and that thing off the line will RIP your lips off !! and set um in the back window deck!! LOL
The tire compounds they have today.. You could get a Oiled pig to stick to the track..lol
Like i know that i cant really build an engine that could beat a 460...
To much there to tackle....
I dont think i could build a 390 to beat a 460....
But im going to build a ranchero so we are golden!
I'll admit the engines compared are a no brainer but skill has a lot to do with it too. I watched my buddy spank a 914 in a ****ing Pinto(drunk race), so driver skills have alot to do with it. I'm quite sure the 914 has ***** to spare over a Pinto. As far as building a Ranchero, I'd be thinking big cubes unless it's a early 60's type. The late fifties and late 60's are tanks.
