Looking to swap in a solid axle into my 97 F-250. Has anyone already dones this? If so how hard is it to do, and what problem might i run into if any? Not a fan in the ttb and kinda partial to a solid axel. Thinking that one from a F-350 should just bolt in its place. thanks for any help.
They do it a lot and I would like to do it too if I can find an axle that isn't a millon bucks. Do a search for SAS and you will find plenty of info. One from a SRW F-350 will bolt right in with addition of a trac bar. brakes vary from year to year so you my not be able to use your same calipers.
You'll need a DANA 60 from an 85.5-91 F350 (kingpin) or 92-97 F350 (ball joint). Also needed is the F350 track bar, track bar bracket, drag-link, tie-rod, and maybe the F350 driveshaft. I have the swap on my '95 F250 (pics in gallery). These frontends used can be $1500, but can be cheaper, usually $650-$1000 around here in new england.
What is the difference between the kingpin style and balljoint style?
Kingpin knuckles are generally considered a little stronger, also easier to do a crossover steering setup. The best write up ever, and will explain everything-

Way to revive a dead thread.
YES, you can use SD slings but you will need a PMF RSK to move the hanger out to accept the longer front springs. For the rear you you will need to drill out your spring hangers for the larger diameter bolts
