97 F250HD solid axle swap questions

Hi all,
I have a 97 F250HD 351w 5spd, and the front axle is the ttb Dana 50. It needs some work, (read ball joints, and new leaf springs) and I don't like the ttb setup anyway so I want to do a solid axle swap.

I have a whole truck for a donor, with the same axle ratio. The donor is a 94 F350 7.3 idi diesel automatic.

I have been reading up on this swap as much as I can, but I still have a few questions.

1. Will the drive shaft from either truck work or do I need to get one from a 5 speed 351w f350?

2. I read that the 95-97s have bigger front brakes, is that true? If yes, can I just buy brake parts (rotors, calipers, pads, lines) for a 97 and bolt them on? Or should I stick with the smaller 94 brakes? Will there be any noticeable difference in braking if I use the 94 parts?

3. When the swap is complete, will the ttb stuff bolt up to the f350 so that I can sell it as a rolling parts truck? Or should I scrap the left overs?

Thanks for any help. I need to get this done soon because my inspection sticker is do soon.

Hi all,

After much more research I found the answer to question 3. Yes the ttb stuff will bolt in place of the Dana 60 on the donor truck.

But I still have a question about the brakes. The research I have done says that the difference in brakes is in how the calipers mount. The caliper support is molded into the steering knuckle.

So the question is, will the Dana 50 knuckles bolt onto the Dana 60? Or do I need to find a pair of 95-97 Dana 60 knuckles? And if I need the 60 knuckles, is the swap even worth it?

TTB knuckles won't fit the D60. I can't definitively answer your other questions.

Ok, so the knuckles don't fit.

Does anyone know if it's even worth it to source 95-97 knuckles to swap in the newer brakes? Or should I just get used to ordering parts for a 94?

I just put a 93 Dana 60 in place of my 95 dana 50 TTB 2 weeks ago. the brakes are the same, just how the calipers mount to the hub. otherwise they are the same size/stopping power. What i did was keep the 93 calipers w/ the axle, and just hooked up the hoses to the calipers, using new banjo washers. worked fine, no leaks, same stopping power

Thanks for the info. I think my current plan of attack is going to be to just swap the axle in, and replace all the brakes with new stuff, and new flex lines. I believe that I should just buy them for the 94.

Did you have to swap drive shafts?

I have heard that some peoples f250 drive shafts fit. Others had to have them shortened. I have a complete truck for a donor so I do have the f350 drive shaft, but the trucks have different motors and transmissions, so I'm not sure if it will fit or not.

What i did was swap the TTB50 out of one of my trucks with the D60 out of another one, keeping both drivable. I have the D60 driveshaft bolted to the TTB50 now, I have not tried to bolt up the D50 shaft to the D60, as in the end i want driveshafts to stay with their original axles.

The truck i put the D60 under is my 89 F250 down there VVVVV, which im still in the process of getting back on the road. It still needs a bunch of work, so i have not yet had the chance to drive it w/ the D60 axle and springs.

89 F250 w/ 93 Dana 60 SAS

The truck that got the TTB50 is my 93 F350 diesel. I also swapped over the TTB front lift i had on my 89, a 4" kit from rough country. Honestly with the extra weight from the diesel over the 351, it does ride a bit better under the diesel. The truck rides no worse with the TTB than it did with the solid axle.

93 F350 w/ 95 Dana 50 TTB (axle i already had under my F250)

You must have done "much more research" between these 2 post. it was a whole 13 minutes apart

You will want to use the 350 shaft and have it reworked to the correct length. It has the double knuckle which will eliminate any vibration. Just leave the shaft out when you put the ttb in the 350 and let the new owner worry about it.
