Yes, you are right. This was was the plan. Carbon build up is on the internal area of the valve.
Start several days ahead of the job and soak the ERG valve to EGR tube fitting with penetrating oil. I hope that you have better luck than I did on my old 97 Ranger! I ended up sawing both ends of the EGR tube!!
Good idea Bill. I know my Expedition was a bear until I got some PB Blaster on it.
I bought a open-end wrench to fit, took it to work, heated and bent to clear the EGR valve. I tried PB Blaster and a MAP torch for some heat. Used a Dremel cutting wheel to cut and chiseled away the EGR valve from the fitting. Removed the front left tire and then the wheel well to get more cuts in. I had 2/3 of the threads showing on the fitting and it still wouldn't budge!
Out came the electric saw, cut the EGR tube at the EGR valve. The fitting at the exhaust manifold was froze too, so I buzzed it off also.
What I really like is that between the two vacuum line fittings is what they refer to as the orfice where the DPFE takes its inputs from. You think orfice, tiny hole, right? At least I did! It's has to be 1/4" in diameter and looks like a flat washer.
First post here, been on lots of other forums for other cars, and didn't think I would be where I am right now, I have an 02 V6 XLT 4X4, and decided to change the plugs, it has developed a slight miss at startup, so I figured it was time for new plugs, 110K. I didn't really want to do them again, so I got the NGK Iridium plugs, I have had good luck with them in other cars. Well Got it all back together, and it won't run for crap. I have a miss on #4 and #6. I have tried putting the old plugs back in, switching around the coils, and it stays on 4 and 6. I then switch the #5 and #6 injectors thinking maybe I had a pluged injector, nothing same thing, there is still nothing on 4 and 5. It is getting spark to those 2, if I pull the coil part way out it will spark across to the head, so that leads me to believe fuel, but I am bot too sure what is going on so any help would be greatly appreciated. I hate to take it to the dealer, but it might be getting to that point.

It had a miss before you started and a miss after. Either your miss is getting worse or it's something you did. Look into whatever you had to remove to get to the plug.
I've read where these engnines are touchy about what type of plugs are used too.
Well I guess I should restate that, it didn't really have a miss before, it was just a little rough on start up, like worn plugs, then it would run fine.

Either you did something wrong or it don't like the plugs.
I agree with that. It's easy for those seals not to line up correctly when you try to put the intake back on. Vacuum leaks can easily happen at this point.
did you put new gaskets on intake upper and lower? I don't know it will help you but search threads for how to change your escape plugs its a great how to maybe it would help retrace your steps and type of plugs people used
Ok, replaced all 6 COP's and DPFE. Cleaned EGR and erased codes. Seems to run better than ever. I will be driving the Escape to work this week to make sure the codes don't reappear before putting a "For Sale" sign on her.
What is weird though, my accelerator cable developed a 3/4 inch end play during this. Not sure how this happened, but I ended up putting some shims on the cable to tighten it up. I didn't see any way to adjust it.
