Hey, just an update on the 05 escape I was working on. Replacing the PCM, All 6 Coils, and all 6 spark plugs per TSB fixed the problem. We were a little leary on replacing all this stuff (was over $1,000), so we called a tech hotline (Identifix), and they said "There's a reason that over 10,000 of these updates have been done". I wish I knew what caused the PCM to go bad. Whether it is too much resistance in the spark plug causing the firing voltage to go up, and creating a crossfire situation where the voltage induces a voltage in another wire going to the PCM, or if the high voltage in the coil creates some sort of interference with the PCM.

I guess who knows.

Its fixed and I hope that mabye it will help someone out!

P.S. After the TSB is done, you need to tow it to Ford and have the anti-theft reprogrammed.

If I read your example correctly, then no, you have it wrong.

See Slammer's post quoted below. He has it right.

Standing in front of the Escape, looking at the engine bay with the hood up, bank one, which has the number 1, 2, & 3, cylinder is closest to the firewall/windshield.

Bank two, which has the number 4, 5, & 6 cylinder is closest to the front bumper, front grille.

The number 4, 5, & 6 coils can be reached by removing the plastic cover.

The intake needs to be removed in order to reach the number 1, 2, & 3 coil.

Cylinder numbering

I knew I should've bought the Chilton's or Hayne's manuals.

Just to be sure I don't get it wrong again,
is number 4 on the passenger side?
and number 6 is on the driver's side?

The engine in front wheel drive vehicles are transverse mounted (mounted sideways), so on V6 applications, bank one and bank two are not on the passenger side and drivers side, like V8's, with the fan/fan belt/accessory belt setup at the front of the vehicle, behind the front grille.

On transverse mounted engines, the fan/fan belt/accessory belt setup is over one of the wheels, so you cannot use the passenger side and drivers side as reference points. The Ford Escape has that assembly over the passenger side of the vehicle. That means the first bank, which contains the numbers 1, 2, & 3 cylinders is closest to the firewall/front windshield.

The number two bank, which contains the numbers 4, 5, & 6 cylinders is closest to the very front of the vehicle, behind the front grille.

So to answer your question, the number 4 and number 6 cylinder are on the same side. They are both on the number two bank, which is closest to the front of the vehicle, closest to the front grille.

Disregard my last post, I understand now how you're asking your question.

Yes, the number 4 cylinder is closest to the fan assembly (passenger side), and the number 6 cylinder is farthest away from the fan assembly.

So yeah, the number 6 is basically the drivers side.

That of course leaves the number 5 cylinder sandwiched between the two.

Coil On Plug sammich anyone?

Thank you for dumbing this down to my level. Now I get it.

Hopefully I can keep my Escape running a little longer!

you can mess with your escape and a cheap code reader all you want.ive seen it where cheap code readers give you codes that dont even match the code that is extracted from an IDS scanner at a ford dealership.basically if you want your vehicle fixed right just take it to a dealership and tell them to put it on the IDS scanner, they will perform a power balance to tell you which coil is misfiring at that particular time, and if it turns out that all your coils are o.k possibly an injector is acting up which they will be able to perform a fuel systems test and tell you right away.

as far as sensors going screwy, well ive seen it where MAF sensors are acting up and do not throw a code, if you replaced all the plugs,1 coil, still running crappy kind of thing, did you reset the Keep Alive Memory? because the KAM stores fuel trims, shift points, all that good stuff and if you had a bad coil or bad plugs and you freshened the engine up with some new plugs and a coil but never reset the KAM, well its trying to operate with the old stored values but with new pieces.just a thought...

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...because dealership techs NEVER make mistakes and always fix things the right way, the first time.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeze dude. Your first post and you come onto an automotive enthusiast forum where we all pool our knowledge to help each other out, to help save money, and you're gonna spout off and claim only the dealership can fix things the right way?

C'mon brah, use that noggin of yours!

How do you reset the Keep Alive Memory? Disconnect the battery cable for 15+ min?

Before you replaced your plugs did you look for a date code on them? They may have damaged your PCM. I agree that a power balance test needs to be done to determine which cylinder is misfiring. My question is, why is there no light on now? Any misfire should be picked up by the crank sensor on the drive cycle that it happens.

Nope, due to the fact that I wasn't aware that a certain date code was required as that is not mentioned in ANY of he Escape information that I have available to me.

Just received 6 new COP's so I will be pulling the intake, all the injectors and have them checked and hopefully they will only need cleaning. I will then get new Motorcraft plugs with the proper date, install the newly cleaned injectors and the new COP's. With any luck at all this will solve the problem. If not it will go in for a test.

Never heard of KAM either. How do you do that?

Thanks,

Chuck

You know, its funny you mention resetting the KAM.

Friday we were dealing with a dodge intrepid with a miss. Just got it finished before we closed up, Started it up, miss was still there, did not run well at all. We didnt have alot of time to mess with it, so we left it till monday. Come monday the battery was dead, (key was in ig, all weekend), hooked up the jumper box, and it started right up and ran fine, basically because we reset the KAM.
