Hello, My wifes escape now has a misfire in it also. i've had to change the lower intake manifolds a while back and it's been running good till now.
My question is for Stewart_H. I like your thoughts on the two step process of finding your bad coil and swopping them out with good ones in the back and then replacing the one that is bad in the front. My question is how can you tell without all these scanners and test equipment of today? I didnt know if you had it running and pulled them out to check them or whatever?
I hope I can find someone to tell me which cylinder it missing and I can then go from there.
Without a scanner you will not find which one is the culprit. You can buy a whole set of coil overs for around $100 on e-bay. The ones I got for that price were Motorcraft.
that's not a bad deal, i guess that's what I'll probably do. I'll probably try to get it scanned somewhere to see if they can tell me what cylinder it is. I hope it's not an injector or pcm is what I'm sort of guessing on changing them. However it cant hurt having 130K on it. I had to change all those gaskets before (lower had a leak which I found on FTE). Did you have to match any numbers? Like Vin, model etc? The link on ebay has their product fitting all years up to date?
Battman76 the only help I can offer you is that if you are around southern MN I have a scanner and would be more than happy to help. Otherwise try advance auto or autozone.

Go to your local Autozone or Kragens. They have scan tools there you can use that will pull the codes for you.
Now there is also a process you can try that might pull codes from your digital odometer readout gauge in the dash. It works for the Gen 2 Lightnings, but I've never tried it in my daughters Escape.
Please keep in mind this procedure is far from 100% accurate. I've used it on my L before, and occasionally it will show no DTC's detected, but my scan tool would detect codes that were present.
Here is the procedure:
Put the key in the ignition, but don't turn it on. Press and hold the trip reset button, then turn the key to the ON position.
Once the key is turned, after a few moments, the lights on the odometer read-out will change. Let go of the button when they change.
Once the read-out has changed, each press of the reset button will scroll through the menu.
If you press the button too long, it will clear out and go back to showing the mileage.
Scroll through the menu choices until you find one that says DTC.
If you have a code, it will say DTC2145 or something...OR DTC NONE for no codes
For the Lightnings, one of the menu choices is a digital RPM readout. Kinda fun to watch when you first find it.

PS - I know they're expensive, but I wouldn't use ANY coil on plug except Motorcraft COP's. Too many failures and bad outcomes from other name brand COP's (MSD, Grannatelli, etc) from my fellow Gen 2 L owners on the L boards for me to use anything BUT Motorcraft, much less a no-name ebay product.
Funny, do we all have wives that have an Escape. My wifes is throwing a P0304 and 5 too. Glad they are in front. So it sounds like replacing the COP is the fix for this. Correct? Or should I go through the switch to maybe #6 cylinder for a test? It is also throwing a P0402 Code. This is exactly why I bought my wife an 04 X5 for reliability.

The Escape in my family belongs to my daughter. My wife drives a PSD Excursion. She needed a beast in order to pull our horse trailer and travel trailer!
You know what they say about being safe and not sorry. It sure wouldn't be a bad idea to swap your COP's around to make sure you have bad ones.
Ok, just bought 6 Motorcraft COPS DG500 and a new DPFE dated 12/07. Will be installing them this weekend. I will keep you all posted.
Did you test the DPFE with a vacuum pump following a pinpoint test procedure? Could be the EGR valve itself, ERG solenoid or being commanded to open by the PCM.
EGR was replaced a few months back. Those things rarely go bad. Although anything could happen. The Escape needs to get sold and I just want to fix these errors before it gets the for sale sign put on it. I already bought my wife a BMW X5 last year since the Escape started running weird on her. Can't have that with a baby on board.

All it takes is some crude on the EGR valve seat to cause the problem. I had a ERG with a P0402 go away for two months and come back. I had a friend vehicle that I scanned, pulled a P0402, cleared it and it "never" came back!!
