everythinf i read the "U" stands for 4R70W. the tranny i pulled today at junk yard had a 5.0 with mass air and the above tranny. i just wanted to meake sure they dint give the AODE the same door code.

In 1993 Ford started using the "U" Transmission code and it was for the 4R70W or AODE-W.
The 4R70W is a wide ratio version of the AODE and the W stands for the word Wide. In other words the gear ratio is wider in the 4R70W than in the AODE that was used in cars.
The 4R70W or AODE-W also has different tail shaft then the AODE. In other words you can not stick a drive shaft with a 4R70W yoke into a AODE transmission.
There are no listings for the AODE ever being in a F-series truck.
i pulled it today, and the truck was a f150 with "U" door code, so they must have been in f-series trucks and i know they were behind the 5.4 in 97 on newer trucks. the 5.4 wont fit the windsor family engines.
here are a couple of links that say they were put in f-150 as well. Ford Transmission Spotter's Guide .: Articles here is a section(4R70W 1994-up trucks w/ overdrive cancel switch and P-R-N-OD-2-1 can be 4R70W tranny. F150 door tag trans code = U . This tranny is computer controlled. Pan length just under 15". New and improved AODE. Wide ratio AODE w different output shaft).
Does anyone know if the tail shaft changed any on the 4R70W between the longbed and short bed? I didn't think it did just the lenght of the drive shaft, if anyone can help thanks.
I know this an old thread, but this is the same thing that I'm trying to nail down. I know that my truck came with a 4R70W, but it has been swapped out for an AODE, I have confirmed this by the pan and filter kit that I just replaced. I'm needing to know if my computer needs to be adjusted for the different gear ratios in the various gearing. Have a thread opened up in the Trans section, but no hits yet, I'll take some chances here.
The AODE was never put in a truck, from what you say I guess you have a Car Transmission in it.
The AODE and the 4R70W (AODE-W) have a different gear ratio and tail shaft size along with a different tail housing.
I will guess that you are talking about the 1995 F150 so the PCM Computer should work for both as the Information from the VSS (PSOM) and the OSS (Output Shaft Speed) sensor would not be effected by the transmission gear ratio.
The only problem would be a some difference in pulling power from the different ratio and the output shaft would not be as strong.
