What transmission is code " U "

OK, I need help.
I'm trying to figure out what tranny I have on my 95' F150 4x4 with the push button OD. I have search these forums and come up with nothing for code " U ". I'm guessing it's an E4OD but I hear that's code E not u. anyone know? Also I bought it used with 100K on it. Should I go ahead and chage tranny fluid/filter and what is the best oil for this mysteriuos transmission. Thanks

"U" on a 97 4.6 liter automatic f150 means 4r70w transmission. there are several places on the net to decode your vin and door jamb sticker.

Thanks 03f150man. This is weird that my 95' would have the same code as a 97'. I went and rechecked and it definitely has a code U.

Ford uses a given engine or tranny code for years at a time.

So does this mean I have the 4r70w transmission? Was Ford making them in 95'?

The AOD-E and the 4R70W are the same tranny with some running improvements along the way. The code U was used for both designations of the tranny.

So then it must be the AOD-E. Do you know anything about it ? Is it a good unit for pulling and highway? My Haynes doesn't even recognize the AOD-E. Oil type? There must be info. somewhere on this unit. Gets more confusing the deeper I get.

my 1997 4r70w was factory filled with mercon. will bet that yours came from the factory with mercon as well. Regular fluid changes and a transmission cooler will do wonders to extend transmission life but there is no silver bullet to neutralize hard 4x4 offroad use or pulling really heavy loads in rough terrain. Experts on this thread may disagree, but i think it is better to change the tranny/converter fluid and the filter on your 100k truck. Maybe avoid a tranny flush, but change the fluid for sure (IMO).

Thanks for the feed back. I read in a different post to go to Baumann Engineering Website and sure enough that have every bit of info. for the Ford tranny's. The U does stand for AOD-EW which is identical to the 4r70w. They also said that this is the best performance transmission made by ford because it is ALL controlled by the EEC not just partially like the E4OD. The AOD-EW and 4R70W have been vastly improved and beefed up since it's predasessor the AOD which was light duty use. Lots of good reading.

The "4R70W" designation was used in '95 for the truck transmission - I have a '95 EVTM that shows it. What did the VIN decoder not recognize? If you post your VIN (leave out the last 4 digits), I'll decode it. If you e-mail or PM me with your e-mail address, I'll send you a 320K doc and a 170K pdf for decoding VINs and door stickers.

2wd & 4wd use the same transmission.

The only difference is the output shaft and extension housing.

You were listening to someone that has no idea what they are talking about. There are 2wd and 4wd 4R70W transmissions. As Stuart1 said the differences are the output shaft and extension housing.
