Not a powerstroke but you guys are too good not to ask:
My little brother is looking at an 88' 4x4 7.3L auto with banks sidewinder real clean on it hase around 120,000 on it asking $3K
Is there anything different need to look for on an IDI. I know the powerstroke version pretty well but havn't looked at IDI before?
I was thinkin its prob worth 1500 at best but havn't seen it
the sidewinder kit is pretty decent, they run darn near like a stock powerstroke with it. you can turn the fuel up and get the to run half way decent without changin injectors and pumps out. 3k doesnt sound bad if its in good shape, thats low miles as far as i'm concerned. look for all the same basic things, air intake, turbo fins, oil condition, antifreeze for color... all the basics.
with a little fine tuning they are not that bad, the guys in the idi forum can show you trucks that will out run the best of ours.
at one of my dealerships i worked at our tranny guy had a crewcab with an idi and the banks sidewinder kit on it. in addition to that the injection pump was tweaked a little and that thing ran excellent, got a puff of black smoke then a consistant light haze from the tailpipe. it was enought to push you into the seat but no race truck. definatly a far cry from the sluggish 7.3 natureally asperated motor.
I prefer the old IDI w/ Turbo more than a Powerstroke. They can be made to outpull any Powerstroke. A 7.3 IDI Factory ATS Turbo, if you put a 3 inch downpipe and a new Turbo Flange from ATS it will outpull a stock Powerstroke. Go down to the next forum, they can tell you more about it.
my '90 IDI with a banks sidewinder will out pull my '97 PSD with a 3" down pipe 4" strait exhaust 6637 intake and 60 hp programing, this is towing the same trailer up the same 6.5% grade for 7 miles
