SO I pulled the release in the cab of my 90 F250 and the cable that attaches to the handle broke. The handle is now detached from the cable and the hood is latched closed. How do I get the hood open so I can replace and fix the cable? I have looked from under the truck but cannot see any obvious way to release the latch. Obviously this is for anti-theft/safety reasons.
They are not screws, they are little plastic push-clips that you can just pop loose. They are not there to hold the grille in, they just hold down the plastic shelf that goes from the grille to the core support.
I have had the hood latch sieze on my truck(pulling the release did nothing the hood didn't even pop up the first inch) and I managed to get the hood open without removing the grill so I know its possible. Our little Ranger also had a broken hood release cable when we bought it, the latch was fine and the cable was pretty easy to replace once the hood was up.
Did the cable pull into the engine compartment when it broke off the handle? You might be able to grab it inside the cab with pliers if it didn't pull all the way through.
Think brake cable for your old schwinn. Find an end, either at the handle where you lost it, or drag the whole thing out under the hood where it ends, cut the casing off like you were sharpening a carpenters pencil, put a pair of pliers in the glove box, and you are good to go until you want to do something more. in my new to me '90 f-150, and a prior VW Fox, I can hold the shrouding (insulation if your an electrician) in one hand and give a clean tug on the cable with the other to release the hood. The guys before are right though, fishing out the cable may be the worst of it.
Pull the plastic kick trim off and unbolt the bracket. I cut the outer part of the cable back about an inch and try to pry and pull it off. Vise grips on the frayed cable and hold the cable and POP!
