Rack and Pinion steering to suit F250

Hello
I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone who does power rack and pinion steering kits to suit a 1974 F250..
Cheers

I don't know of anyone that does it. You didn't metion if your f250 is a 2 or 4wd. Keep in mind, 4wd with a solid axle does not lend itself well to rack and pinion steering. the 2wd doesn't work well either. The trick to steering, is to have the steering links follow the same range of motion as the spindles if that makes any sence. So basically rack and pinion is ideal for control arm suspensions with short links such as in most cars and old chevy and dodge 2wd trucks. For our 2wd twin-I beams or solid axle 4wd, the stock steering geometry is tough to improve upon.

Thank you for your reply. The truck im looking at is 2WD.
I'll have to have a hunt around and see if i cant locate a power steering kit before i purchase the truck. Ive been told that there is a datsun power steering box that fits???

Cheers

I saw someone on here who put a crown vic subframe under one of these trucks...or was it a 67-72. Any way I think that would be your best bet for a rack and pinion. So whats wrong with the original power steering any ways?

You are are way better off just using a stock power steering box. You shouldn't need any type of kit. They are the same for all 2wd's f100, f150, f250, f350. They are dime a dozen here in colorado. You could also order all the parts from your local auto parts store to get power steering put together. I would be shocked to find that your truck didn't come with power steering.

Just checked out your profile, you are in austailia, power steering boxes probably not dime a dozen for you. Maybe we could work out a trade... I will send you a power steering box if you can send a set of those austrailian 2v heads for my 400!!

You guys are missing the point. Rack and Pinions are much more responsive than a steering box. They are much lighter as well. I'd assume the OP is building a street truck. The CV subframe looks like a great deal if you can handle the fabrication.

You might have some luck with the guys at The Pick Up Place but it's not going to be cheap - nothing in Australia is for these things!!!

I'm going to start investigating what's needed to fit a US power steering box to the Australian F-truck as the prices here are just insane.

Cheers,

The very first year that Rack & Pinion Steering was available on full sized: Ford's (Crown Vic's), Mercury's (Grand Marquis) and Lincolns (Town Cars) was 2003.

Im guessing the steering wheel & box are on the "wrong" side of the truck too. Just to make things more interesting!!!
