Bed Removal 1976 long bed
Then I got 3 strong friends-one on each corner and lifted it off, and set the bed on a couple of saw horses.
I did stand the bed on the tailgate end(tailgate off, less weight)-straight up, it sat on some woodchips, and never hurt anything-heh, I never took off the tail light trim, or tail lights and they were fine.
btw woodchips suck to work in, its more like an itchy swim if you have to lay in them.
We popped mine off using four c-clamps attached to the bed sides (used 2x4 blocks and little scraps for rubber to avoid unnecessary scratches). Ran some heavy steel poles through the clamps on each side and attached a chain between the two poles. Ran the chain over the bucket of a front-end loader and guided the bed as it lifted off the frame and onto the ground.
As for things to disconnect. The wiring is pretty simple, but by all means be sure to mark your wiring well so it all hooks back up the same. I didn't do a real good job on this front and I regretted it. The fuel hoses might be tough -- mine were old and crusty enough that they were not going to break loose of the rigid filler necks. I cut my hoses to get them off and replaced them while I was under there. Not cheap any way you slice it since the exact replacements are $40-50 each from the usual suspects. I was able to make something work from stock filler neck tubing from the local NAPA. With hoses and new clamps it ran just under $60 for both front and rear tanks out the door.
Hope that helps. Just bolted my bed back down yesterday, so the experience is pretty fresh in my mind. Let me know if you have any questions.
Rick
